Error: Black Screen with cursor after Windows Updates - Windows 10 [1607]

Symptoms of Error:

 

After Windows Updates has been run, the PC is restarted and either before or after logging in, the screen appears black with just the mouse cursor, which can still be moved around the screen.

The hard disk light on the PC may show activity, but this may only run for a short time.

The PC stays in this state for some time. If left long enough, the screen my turn grey with an active mouse cursor, but the PC doesn't become usable.

 

I have posted this problem in the Microsoft Community, with my diagnostics and progress of my investigation into the error.

 

Please update either this post or the Community site with anything you find out about this on going problem.

I read your post but there seems to be some (potentially) vital information missing. What is the make/model of PC? Which video card/driver version are you seeing this occur on? Which BIOS version?

What do your event viewer logs on the local machine say?

 

I guess this doesnt happen on all machines, it only happens on a few of which are random and if you power cycling the machine it wont do it again?

I have seen this occur on Dell, Hp and other PCs. Intel and ATI graphics cards.

If I tried to get hardware specific for every Pc, I would be here all year with a very long post!!

The post on the Microsoft Community, linked to above, shows the DCOM error that appear in the event viewer during the black screen state. The power cycle does stop it, but it had appeared again on the same Pc when installing more updates a week later!!

 

I did a search on here for 'black screen windows 10', but didn't find the above post. I will have a read. Cheers

Interesting. Are you running the same image on all those different OEM PCs? We have been using Windows 10 on several different Dell OptiPlex and Latitude models for a year and have yet to experience that issue. We use the same base image for everything. It is Windows 10 Enterprise and to create our image, we use the install.wim file from media along with a sysprep answer file. We use SCCM for drivers/updates and don't bother removing any store apps or really any other image modifications (other than turning on .Net3 feature using DISM).
