Anyone using a BT EAD product? We're moving our connection over to this next summer and are awaiting a site survey - oddly it's Virgin Media doing the install although it's definitely a BT EAD connection we're moving to! This is for a 1Gb symmetrical connection.

 

We're also having an FTTC 80mb line installed at the same time for redundancy - any Smoothwall users able to tell me if it's easy to config the Smoothwall to only use the 80mb line if the primary goes down or suffers a major performance loss?

a BT EAD is just a BT Openreach fibre product.

 

An EAD links two sites together, where as an EAD LA circuit links your site back to the local telephone exchange. The later is what's used when installing most leased line circuits. We've installed thousands of them.

 

Installation can be a pain in the back side if no BT fibre exists onsite already

Failover between lines is usually handled by the router. We have an Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Pro doing the job here, and a Cisco 1921 doing it at our other leased line site.

We have an EAD link (OpenReach are the wholesale provider to our ISP) it only goes 1/2 a mile but took 2yrs to put in! The biggest issue with them (it's just a fibre optic cable after all) is they have to get permission from the local council to open up the inspection holes to run the cable and its the council that are the bottleneck causing any delays normally.

 

We're supposed to be doubling out internet speed a month ago and it's delayed because (you guessed it) OpenReach are the ones who put the new kit in for the new line and they are a law unto themselves so take any dates with a very, very large pinch of salt!
