mikeprice Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 Investigate the fault so the building doesn't burn down? wimp - that's the coward's way out - live life on the edge - feel the moment etc etc reminds me of fixing my OH's lamp when we first met - fuse had blown previously so she had just wrapped it in kitchen foil and put it back. cue going round the whole house replacing foil wrapped fuses!
IrritableTech Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 Actually after recently looking at the internals of three breakers (AC, DC and AC/DC), to compare their design this shouldn't work. Even with the actuator lever held on, the mechanism should still trip.

Thank goodness you are still with us.
Andrew_C Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 Ummm... Outer insulation strilled WAY to far back, clamp on the inners, well it would have been if both screws were still there. Live terminal not tight enough so had over heated, further loosening the terminal, resulting in the plug melting. Earth terminal loose, and as you say, wire too short. Once the earth is removed, the filtering capacitors raised the shell of the machine to 1/2 live voltage.

That seems wrong, surely the outer shell should be electrically isolated and the earth is just a fail safe if something comes lose/shorts inside?!
