Darned WSUS

So after the issue with the broken WSUS update being fixed, I've now got another issue where the WSUS Application is stopping in IIS8 (on 2012r2). I've read that this is due to WSUS struggling to recycle memory and so giving up. When I re-start the app in the IIS8 application pool it all works again.

 

I've upped the WSUS server to 4 virtual cores and 8Gb of RAM but it's still happening.

 

Has anyone sorted this out and can offer some advice/

Mine does that too. I've just set my WSUS server to restart at 4am on Friday mornings and it hasn't keeled for a couple of weeks. It's no biggie as it only does WSUS and WDS.

Indeed. There is a small conspiracy theory part of me that wonders if some of these issues are built in to force reboots to apply updates to servers that could otherwise be left upright for months!

WSUSPool advanced settings

 

Set WSUSPool private memory limit to 0 (no limit)

Regular time interval to 0 (no "arbitrary" schedule)

Set specific time to 4AM so it recycles when no one's around.

Thanks @KevinH - I've done all of that now. I think the issue is with the WSUS server this time is that I've had to rebuild it so it cannot cope with the sheer amount of updates coming down.

 

I've also finished setting up AdamJ's Clean-WSUS script (v2.06) so hopefully I'll run this at lunch time and set it to run weekly.

He goes by OverDrive on Spiceworks, and his script is all that! Some people hesitate (mine was already running OK), but the approvals process just flies after you run it. Takes out the rubbish, and re-indexes the tables. Watch the next time you approve updates, it will shock you how fast it runs.

Hiya - yeah I noticed who he was. He seems like a good guy wanting to help people. I ran the script for the first time and it cleared a load from my database. It now runs daily at 5am. I think I could change it to weekly without too much issue.

Absolutely can. Frankly, I never got my Round Tuit out to schedule the task, So I run it manually when I remember to. The first run is really the most important one.

I wish there were more like OverDrive out there - he responded to my query about his script literally in minutes !

 

His script sorted this issue for me.

Agree totally @Australian - it's a cracking script that does things the MS software should do. Must remember to keep up to date with it. It's worked wonders on my WSUS server.

 

I wonder what other scripts are out there of the same level of brilliance that improve networks.
