DVI to VGA not working

I'm using an AMD Radeon HD 5450 graphics card, which has DVI-I, VGA and HDMI:

 

 

I've purchased a DVI-I to VGA adapter:

 

 

When using the adapter with a standard VGA cable into my monitor, I don't get anything. When using the HDMI or VGA ports, they work fine. I'm tempted to just blame the adapter and buy another, but I want to narrow it down before that so I know it's definitely the cause.

Id say its the adaptor. Did you get it off ebay?

 

The vga (analogue) pins arent xonncted on the cheaper ebay ones sometimes

Some graphics cards don't have the VGA pins active in the DVI-I connector you may need a DVI-D to vga adaptor that about £23 or you could use a hdmi to vga. Check out the manual as to which combination of outputs is supported. Edited October 2, 2016 by nicholab

A HD5450 should have the VGA via DVI-I connection active - I have quite a few and they all work fine.

Are you using the hdmi at the same time?

 

I'm pretty certain the HD5450 only supports dual screen with the VGa and 1 of HDMI or DVI connection.
