Fazza Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 This was done last year by the building contracts, I should have double checked their work! Sorry its network cables that have been cut and reattched with choc block connector LOL - I've seen that plenty of times before in Schools (including my own) it's what happens when you pay people (typically electricians) who think they know what they're doing when really they have no idea. Connections like that will mean that a PC connected to it will be running at approx 80% of it's connection speed! There is a reason why qualified ethernet cabling companies charge a lot more than a 'contractor' does! We have a compromise and get our electrician to run the cables but we do the terminating at both ends so it's done correctly! That way they dont unravel an inch or so of the twisted pairs at either end and then punch it down whereas it shouldnt be any more than a couple of mm (tight as possible) else you'll not be running at full speed on your network! 1
TwistedHelixis Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 Came back after the summer hols to find a bunch of network cables like that. The company had come in to remove asbestos and re build the roof. Looks like any cable in the roof or wall area was cut and then bodged back together after. We are getting them to re-run the entire length back to the cabinet and do it correctly this time. Best case is a slowdown in speed, worst would be random network issues. 1
jdoyle Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 obviously put in place by a twisted pair. 2
unixman_again Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 At the first school I was at, SMT had an electrician cable two rooms. He installed two patch panels in the cab but when he'd finished one classroom, he carried on with the second one on the same patch panel. He also didn't label any of the points, one room went around the other way to the first and neither started in a logical place, such as by the door. Here we get proper cabling people in and they do a brill job - labelled, tested and we get certificates to say so. Costs more but worth it. 1
DJ-1701 Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 All these wires! I thought everything was wireless now! 2
