Transfer Files & Settings From PC To Mac

Hi Guys!

OK.... I have been tasked with installing one of the Governors new computer.

The only problem is, it is a Mac and he wants all his stuff from his old PC transferred to it!

I don't even know where to start as I literally have no experience with Macs!

Has anyone done this kind of thing before that can give me a few pointers?

transfer the files and say its up to him to get the software for them to work!

what exactly is it that he wants transferring, just data or software as well.

 

The software as per above will obviously be down to him due to licensing.

 

You can get open office for the mac using x11 ( you can install x11 from the mac os x disc )

After that installing open office should be fairly straight forward of double clicking the dmg or the pkg file. If a dmg that should mount it and open a window where you can then drag the open office icon into the applications folder, if its a pkg it should go through an installation wizard.

 

As for transferring the data, how do you want to do that ?

 

you going to use a fat32 formatted drive or you going to want to use your network to transfer the data ?

 

Also was there any other things that needed transferring, if so what ?

Copy his stuff to a USB disk then tell him - "As you were obviously so smart to choose a Mac to replace your PC you will obviously know what to do with this", "I have more interesting things to do with my time than clear up after you, Machead!":rolleyes:

No need to faff with X11 - just download NeoOffice instead, which is a native OS X port of OpenOffice, and rather good it is too!

Don't be too daunted - Macs aren't the dark art a lot of people think! I was introduced to them about 18 months ago, and I now happily flit between PC and Mac with no worries.
