HPlum78 Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Hey I got into IT for the drugs, sex and all night parties! yeah this kind of issue takes us away from doing all new things but its bread and butter work and it always seems to be the most tedious and frustrating bits in IT and also the bits that no one outside of IT see or care about. 1
Theldron Posted September 14, 2016 Author Posted September 14, 2016 (edited) Drugs, sex and .... i must be doing IT wrong lol. You get one thing sorted, then something else comes along and bites you on the backside. Don't get me wrong I love my job, just a bad week. On the plus side, its my partners 20 week scan today (reason im off work), find out if its a girl or boy - proud daddy!! Edited September 14, 2016 by Theldron
HPlum78 Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 (edited) Good luck with that, I have just found out we have a girl on the way. Due on the exact same day as her 2 year old brother! all I can infer from that is the routine must be spot on! Edited September 14, 2016 by HPlum78
Theldron Posted September 14, 2016 Author Posted September 14, 2016 Congrats on that mate, nothing wrong with routine lol. Its my first, my partners third, im crapping myself shes taking it in her stride.
zag Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 Being devil's advocaat here (he loves that stuff) - why? SSDs are an expensive option for a fileserver. RAID is a point of failure. First rule of troubleshooting, remove each point of failure, test, test again, more onto the next change. If the RAID is fine, just re-instate it. Takes very little time to install an SSD and separate storage from operating system. Back in the old days of mechanical disks it could take hours to copy storage from one disk to another. These days you can copy your entire file server in 30mins in testing scenarios like this where you are unsure of the problem.
Theldron Posted September 15, 2016 Author Posted September 15, 2016 Well it has been two days since disabling ESET Endpoint on the server and no crashes. Still watching and waiting!! Fingers crossed!!
pantscat Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 How's ESET configured? Is it set to scan inside ZIP/archive files? I've sometimes seen fileservers take a big performance hit because of this.
Theldron Posted September 15, 2016 Author Posted September 15, 2016 (edited) I have checked and not its not. Its set to scan on File Open, File Creation, File Execution and Media to scan is local drives and removable media. So wondering if the Real-time protection is causing the server to meltdown. Have contacted ESET to see what they recommend. Edit: Haha found hidden setup in Real-time file system protection - Additional Threatsense for newly created and modified files - Runtime packets, self-extracting archives. pantscat Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 Hmm... fair enough - thought it was worth checking! Are you running NOD32 or is it the newer ESET File Security for Microsoft Windows Server? I think the latter is supposed to be friendlier.
zag Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 Anti virus could certainly be locking systems files that might need to be in use an causing the system to freeze. We use Microsoft anti virus here and never had any issues.
pantscat Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 NOD32. Ok - in that case it's probably worth upgrading to EFSW (or whatever it's called!) - I've read that it's a lot better behaved on Windows Servers, specifically it should automatically exclude certain system files based on the roles that the server has.
