RPG Figures - Where to get them?

I've brought the D&D starter set for my daughters birthday later this week and whilst it has all the important bits it's always good to have a few figures for props to assist in visualising the game.

I've done some looking around and see that in the UK it's actually quite hard to get them at a reasonable price these days and there seems to be a limited selection. Even from Games Workshop.

So, am I looking in the wrong place, or is there actually a UK site I can go to to get a decent selection of figures?

The birthday is next weekend so any help would be very gratefully received :)

 

*I used to collect and paint the Citadel figures back in the day :)

You after unpainted etc? Or not fussy? And how much is cheap nowadays? :p

 

Weylands do a bunch of their "dungeon saga" stuff which is basically DnD. Dungeon Saga - Fantasy Board Games - Wayland Games

 

If you're happy with a bit more greek/roman style, there's always foundry:

Mythical Gods of Greek Legend | Warriors of Troy Odyssey & Illiad I Poseidon Aphrodite Achilles Sparta

Ta, very helpful.

'Affordable' used to be about £1-2 per small figure upwards to £5 for a larger one. Things like dragons and larger monsters were £10+ and made from metal

This was back in about 1984.

Not bothered about painted/unpainted thing.

Not that helpful, alas! Apparently he now only sells off stuff he's bored with/no longer needs. Might still be worth a mooch on eBay to see what's out there.

Yeah, the prices are silly these days. I used to have about a hundred Citidel Miniatures when I was younger. All painted up very well if I do say so myself :)

I suppose the cost of many are down to the pre-painted ones which have to be done by hand.

But they have a full selection of cool things, and they aren't too​ expensive either.

 

They also have a whole range of Dungeon floor pieces you can paint up so you can make things look extra-impressive.

Have a look for reaper miniatures/pathfinder. Massive range (hundreds) of figures and the normal sized ones can be picked up for a couple of quid on ebay.

The quality of them might not be as high as say Wyrd or GW mini's but for the price they are mostly pretty good. Also I do mini painting commissions... just saying :)

Do you have a 3d Printer? If so I'd be more than willing to pay for materials and running costs to create a basic set of heroes and monsters :)

No I don't have one, but I will hopefully be borrowing one in November.

 

Also thinking of business opportunities on account of extra spare time on Thursday afternoons ;) If there was enough demand, I was wondering if it might be worth buying a 3D printer :)

Unless you have a really, really good one it probably isn't. The quality on even cheapo figures like reaper are better than what most 3D printers can pull off for the same price (cost of materials). You could make money by custom building items but then a lot of people will just use a commercial printing site now to get the best quality possible. Plus you have to 3D sculpt the models yourself or use open source ones which normally do not allow you to resell them.

 

The best use for "home" 3D printers is to build the base model, then hand sculpt the details on, take a mold and then resin cast them to mass produce, cheaper and a ton fast than 3D printing.

 

Miniature gaming is a niche market already and a lot of the popular games will use set figures which you cannot reproduce. Sometimes creating "add ons" such as guns, swords, etc, can be worthwhile but then you run into IP issues (with GW stuff especially).

 

Things that can go well though are "markers" and custom rulers/templates. Quick to knock up models for and print, don't need massive high detail and can be sold in high quantities.

No. Well, not a 'cheap' FDM machine. A powder sintering machine would be good for figures but the figures tend to have many overhangs which for FDM machines means printing a lot of scaffold material and post printing clean-up of the model. You would be far better investing your time learning to 3d model and then having someone else do the printing (so you model a nice Troll and then get paid every time someone asks shapeways to print it).
