Camera in Reception HELP!!

Hi Guys,

 

Our headteacher has asked me to look into installing a camera into reception as a 'security' measure for the receptionist.

 

We don't anything that is going to cost too much, to be honest I was thinking of a simple camera linked to a computer to record.

 

Has anyone done this or something similar?

 

what products are out there freebies?

 

Do I need to inform the public about CCTV in operation im guessing so some wording would be good.

Yes, you have signs up if you have CCTV. I've just bought a Hikvision IP camera. They come in bullet or dome, a quality picture and their free software means you can turn a spare PC or part of one into a NVR. I bought mine for £75 but they are about £120 new.

Could I add more cameras to this at a later date? Does the software allow for this?

I'd recommend the Ubiquiti UniFi G3 cameras, 1080p, built in microphone, POE support: https://www.msdist.co.uk/product_Ubiquiti-UniFi-Video-Camera-Dome-G3.php

 

The NVR software is free and can be installed on a Linux or Windows machine. Adding more cameras later isn't a problem.

 

You'll need to update your information with the ICO to say that you're using CCTV. You also need signage saying that CCTV is in use.

Sorry, I missed you asking initially, mine doesn't, Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co. Ltd. but they do have some models including domes that do.

+1 ubiquiti here. Great cameras but be careful of the poe ratings. Some models of ubiquit use 24v poe so therefore require an in line adapter which transforms the standard 48v from poe switches down to 24v. The alternative would be to use the poe injector on a non poe switch which is supplied with all ubiquity products

You need to check the ICO guidelines and make sure the person asking for the system understands them. This is the summary from their document:

 

Surveillance systems should not normally be used to record conversations between members of the public as this is highly intrusive and unlikely to be justified. You should choose a system without this facility if possible. If your system comes equipped with an independent sound recording facility then you should turn this off or disable it in some other way, unless you can clearly justify its use with robust supporting evidence. If you cannot control sound recording separately you will need to consider how privacy intrusive the system is as a whole, including the recording of sound.

We just deployed our first batch of Ubiquiti UVC-G3-DOME cameras with Ubiquiti NVR hidden away (with an extra 4TB external USB disk to extend recording time) and I've been absolutely blown away by them. The G3 Domes will run off standard PoE (we run ours off our HP switches) but I believe the bullets need passive PoE.

 

The image quality is outstanding, and they give you the option of disabling microphones per camera if needed. We had a bit of a fight with our governors over recording audio, they were really pushing us to do it but in the end the HT sided with me and refused to enable the microphones.

We are looking into the Unifi Video stuff. How many cameras do you have running on the NVR? Have you had any issues with them? Are you planning to scale? If so do you think you would buy multiple NVRs and do these link up? Sorry for all the questions!

You will also need to check your DPR registration (or get the person resposible for it) to ensure it reflects the fact that you record and store CCTV images. If you haven't done that previously it may not be part of your entry in the register.

We have a complete Hikvision CCTV system here. Very flexible. We have NVRs but you can run the software on a PC (PC-NVR) . AS for the cameras, some have a built in mic (the small DS-25xx) models or others can have an external mic. You can run them over the network (plug in anywhere) or if you expand later, move then into the NVRs with POE included.

Generally thought you don't use CCTV for audio capture unless it is known due to data protection/confidentiality.

With Hik we have several NVRs scattered about each having 8 to 16 cameras and single NIC to the network VLAN, client software installed on PC which imports al NVRs, so the only traffic crossing the network is when live view/playback. For recording cameras are straight to the NVR
