Hi there,

the head has asked me to setup a portal for staff to access (using their own logins) that can be used for policy documents, forms for expenses etc and to act as a helpdesk.

Currently we have spice works for the helpdesk if that helps.

Any ideas?

Do you use Google Apps?

Funny you should mention that as today I received a Chromebook as I want to look into tying GApps in to our school as a cost effective way to get computer access in to some areas of the school.

So in answer to your question, not yet and although it's being looked at I don't want to rush anything.

You can create forms and stuff in Google apps. If you want basic forms that are accessed via a logon nothing fancy is required.

We are also on Google Sites and have setup a Google Sites 'portal' which links to all the relevant items. It's locked down so there's a page for staff/students etc. PM me for more details and I'll send screenshots :)

Google Sites is super easy (drag and drop) and then you just need to distribute the link to your students and staff. We put a link on our school website homepage but you could also deploy a desktop shortcut via Group policy.

Totally agree, but worth the OP knowing that more complex approval processes can also be created relatively easily, eg getting HOD, finance and cover sign off for a course.

You could also set up something like Wordpress with LDAP, and make sure no content is shown without logging on. If you're going to a Google Apps environment that'd probably be easiest though.
