I bought this on steam, played 86 minutes, then got a refund.

All the exploration of a vast ocean, but the game has all the depth of a puddle.

Played it loads over the weekend! :D

Really enjoying it (especially now I have quite a few extra Exo Suit slots so I don't have to fight my inventory quite so much lol)

Currently farming a planet with lots of Gold, Albumen Pearl and Vortex Cubes (if I can escape or kill the crazy sentinels) :D

Been playing this quite a bit over the weekend too, unfortunately I have to put up with lag and low settings until I can order my 1080 :( Only playing it with a 670 at the moment.

I didn't realise that you could "analyse" plants too, could have had many more credits had I realised that earlier.

Overall, I find myself just getting lost in the game for hours....

Got this yesterday on a whim, and I have been quite happy with it so far. I have travelled to 4 systems so far and even got a new multi tool that looks like a rifle, just need to figure out how to get a new ship then I will have more space on it.

Has any one else played this yet?

Got this Friday, really enjoying it.

I spent hours on the first planet really exploring it, getting over 50 words, tons of new inventory space and all sorts.

Now I'm on 3rd planet going back to the second one for stuff. On my 4th or 5th ship and 6th tool? Still only my first system. Ship I purchased last night was very expensive but because I mine a lot and then get lost in a cave for about 2 hours I end up with 1-2 million worth of units.

One thing I read was that it's useful not to move so forward due to the difficulty later (I only did this to really be relaxed about the game).

Seeing quite a lot of negative comments though it seems people were expecting more in depth story. Me I just expected a MineCraft game but in a ship and more exploring orientated and not so on building. Probably why I've not been so disappointed.

Still, it's not a hugely budgeted game compared to a lot and out of all the Open World games I've been playing only the Ark and No Man's Sky has had me for more than 2 hours.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone who is also playing this game, my mates are waiting due to other games being out or soon..... so typical - I find a game I really enjoy and would be good to attempt to discover each other.

One thing I need to learn is how to get the ????? stuff on discovery (I know how to upload and edit) but still at 0% plus I can make an animal happy but.. how to gain those animal achievements..

All the above with zero googling this game other than seeing the released trailers. I even spent first night not realising I had a scanner and could switch between my weapons..........

Think I'm on 22 hours now....

Have you tried some of the fixes that are available for lag? (Especially the Disable GSync and Max the FPS ones)

https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/comments/4xkj1w/pc_version_list_of_common_fixes_and_suggestions/

Has helped my fps smoothness quite a bit and a 670 isn't that bad a card :D

Quick question... that no one seems to have asked or mentioned...

How does this compare against Elite Dangerous? is it a similar game? if so comparisons across the games? is it worth purchasing if i already own (and love) Elite?

i heard its going to be VR on PS4 is that the same for PC if so what setup (if announced) will be compatible?

actually turnt out to be more than one question lol

Its not a 1080 though :p I hope to be getting one very soon; just upgraded Board, CPU and RAM so gotta wait a little for the card :)

I'll give these fixes a go tonight, thanks a lot :D

I would have said the space flight section is much more arcade-like than Elite (I see Elite as much closer to a flight simulator and always used to even struggle landing in space stations lol)

With NMS you just have to point it at the entrance and it will auto dock (the same for planets as you come into the atmosphere it will auto slow down.

I like it better as I don't need to wrestle with the complexities of flying

Its like a mixture of minecraft (procedural generated + voxel but minus the building stuff at the moment) and a survival game (have to often make sure you have enough resources for your exo suit)

For me the parts that are making it interesting are the random sandbox exploration natural of the game. (There are no quest npc's - although there is some form of a story IF you decide to follow it)

My brother and I have both played it for about the same length of time - I'm onto my 6-7th system whereas my brother has stayed on the same planet to farm, upgrade his suit and ship and to get 100% completion on animal/plant discoveries.

The game does have some issues at present (and the dev does seem to be doing well at fixes many of them) but even with the issues for me its the best game I've played in ages! (Although I've been waiting ages for a good exploration game anyway)

I know now to buy it for PS4 not PC :)

So did anyone else launch & quit, launch & quit until their starter planet wasn't a terrible hellscape?

I've found my first garden world in the first system I jumped to. No toxins, no rads, nothing trying to eat me so far (unlike previous planets). I've also found loads of crashed ships only to be disappointed to find they're the same as or slightly better if I didn't have to shell out to repair them. My hopes of not blowing 1.5 million for 24 slots seem unlikely.

Crashed ships will only ever be +1/+2/-1/ compared to your current ship unfortunately. But this does mean you can go around switching ships and get quite a high one after only a few planets as some people have done!

Take a read of this:

I would've refunded if I hadn't played more than 2 hours already :(

Can't take this post serious, the fact that he has had to edit it multiple times - because he hasn't explored enough says it all for me. This Universe is that vast you're not going to see everything within the first 20 let alone 30 hours. It's like playing MineCraft on survival and expecting to gain access to build everything at the start.. just doesn't work that way.

I must have 20 - 30 hours by now at least and I still feel like I've barely scratched the surface. I've still only explored a few systems, gone through quite a few ships, tools and still finding "new things". It's like everyone is expecting to see and do anything in the first 3 systems instead of thinking "This Universe is that big.. perhaps I wont see and do everything".

I managed to find my first "trading post" which was effectively multiple landing platforms.

It seems the only thing people are complaining about is perhaps the graphics don't fully match to the trailers? If you don't enjoy the game because maybe you thought there would be more story or bigger combat scenarios then sure.. I can understand that. I essentially thought this game was MineCraft in space but minus the building but more on exploring. And as much as this isn't in my top 20 or 30 games of all time by far.. you know I am really enjoying it. It's exactly what I thought it was going to be.

In fact I thought this was going to be much smaller: Where a planet you can run around easy in 10 minutes, a system which would take another 10 minutes to fly through but instead a planet feels like a planet. A system feels like a system.

Considering the fact this isn't a massively budgeted game.. I'm actually impressed with the way this game is and I don't impress easily in fact I find most games disappointing or "re-hash" of something else. Although there are things I would love to see (my blog has more detail)... I have to say again im enjoying it.

Still learning new stuff and that's good. Then again no game is ever going to be perfect or make everyone happy. The Ark, Solus Project and my other steam games like this have all disappointments in them but the fundamentals for NMS is what I want 90%.

Has anyone who bought it via GOG (store credit knocked £5 off) managed to actually connect to the servers? I have a perpetual "press X to reconnect" at the bottom of the "upload your discoveries" page. All my discoveries have "discovered by Explorer" currently.

I'm assuming people who bought via Steam have "discovered by $Steam_Handle" instead?

-snip-

Well I've currently got 13 hours play time, most of that time was in blissful ignorance hoping the experimental patch would change stuff.. which it didn't. The graphics are fine for me, the FPS is even fine for me, what I don't like is when I'm lied to by developers. If you watch the various trailers and interviews, the gameplay they have shown is completely different.. the most obvious examples are that multiplayer is non-existent (I'm sure I don't need to explain) and flying physics have been dumbed down to the point where it might as well be a Disney game (we can't even fly too low or crash our own ships, how is that sandbox?)

Obviously many people such as yourself will still enjoy the game and I have absolutely no problem with that at all, but we must have simply had different ideas about what was originally advertised.

It has the 'base' of a good, well-thought out game - but that's it..

What exactly did you think this game would be? I've seen people unhappy about it but only short comments not going in to detail?

Only thing the trailer said that I've yet to see is "Epic Space Battles" but I've only been involved in pirates coming after me or a small fleet of trade ships.

The planets are exactly what I assumed they would be (I honestly didn't think we would find Dino's on every planet to make it feel epic - even though I did find one where they were VERY HUGE).

I knew we wouldn't be building anything, before the game was released I already caught the info that we may or may not necessarily meet anyone because the universe is that big.

If the game really isn't what was advertised, why isn't it getting a lawsuit similar to what happened to the last Alien vs Predator game?

Plus the quality value of this game's base value - isn't that more opinion related than fact. :)

The link below sums up pretty much the vast difference between what was promised and what was delivered, Also you did ask why I was unhappy with the game so that is below as well :)

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/08/17/broken-promises-of-no-mans-sky/

Warning: Slight rant below full of negativity (though hopefully it is well reasoned negativity). If YOU like this game then I respect that and you might want to just skip this post. If you haven't decided if you want to get it or not yet you might want to have a read. I must also note that I hadn't seen any of the hype for the game until after I had played it so my opinion is not based on any of the hype or expectations but what I have experienced.

I really want to like this game but it is just SO shallow. Its pretty to look at but that is it. One you have played it for a couple of hours you have seen everything worth seeing, everything else from that point onwards is just the same thing with a different model or skin. I have played it enough to get a 48 slot ship and have over 100mill in units spare, I kept playing it long past the point of it being boring in the hope that something new would be introduced. It wasn't.

I didn't really look at any of the hype for it, I bought it as a space exploration game with combat elements and crafting. I suppose you could say it ticks all of them boxes but once you have explored a couple of worlds there is nothing new to see. Each planet might look a little different but it doesn't have any effect on anything. It is a £20 indie game (that you would buy when its on sell) posing as a £40 AA title.

Things you can explore on planets:

Outposts, abandoned buildings, drop pods, manufacturing buildings, Ruins, "caves" (I think that's pretty much it).

No matter what planet you go to each of these will be pretty much identical every time. Depending on which faction area they are in they will have a model/colour and a slightly different "collectable" but they are all exactly the same underneath. There is no exploring a sprawling manufacturing facility, fighting your way through an alien infestation to find some useful tech, it is land, go to the spot to collect the multitool upgrade, Activate whatever is inside (will be 1 of 2 things) and then jump in the ship and head to the next one. All of the loot containers except the ones that give tech are pointless so there is no excitement of "what will I find in here, will it be something awesome" because it wont be, it will be plutonium, the same resource that became super common once you had explored your second planet.

Outpost - Will have an NPC, multitool upgrade and most likely a machine that will give you a waypoint if you "unlock it" the unlocking mini game will either be a number sequence (which is solved exactly the same way every time) or a guess the right word which you can only actually do properly if you have happened to learn all that factions words (unlikely),otherwise its a guess. Abandoned builds - There will be a tech item in there and one thing that will do you damage if you walk into it, the rest is useless. Drop pods - Always an extra exosuit upgrade that you can buy for an ever increasing price. Until you get the atlas pass so you can buy these on stations you will probably hunt down a lot of these. Etc, etc.

Some of the animal life can be fun to look at and the scenery is amazing but that is it. There is no real interacting with the animals, you can feed them which gives them a smiling face icon but nothing else or you can kill them, which does nothing. Very occasionally they might be hostile if you get close but they are always easy to kill or avoid. The animal life is basically the same AI for every one with a different model attached to it. None of the planets really feel "alive". you see a small group of a single type of animal at a time and they don't really do anything but walk in circles.

You can scan and log all the things you discover but that is only fun for so long as there is no real incentive to do so. You get a few units but in the grand scheme of the game its not enough to be worth the time for that alone.

Things you can explore in space:

Space stations, freighters, some pirate events.

Every space station is exactly the same, they didn't even change the models on this one, just recoloured the interiors.

Freighters just kinda sit there. You can attack them but the space combat is so crud that unless you have good upgrades the sentinels will wreck you and there isn't that much of an incentive to do it as the rewards are poor compared to just buying/selling in station or mining expensive minerals and selling on bulk.

Pirates are fun when you start out in your rubbish ship and take on one or two. It is a challenge, the space combat is clunky as hell but you think it will get so much better with ship upgrades. Then you have a 40+ slot ship with 30 odd slots of upgrades and it is still clunky as hell except now you have 15 or 16 ships you need to kill. Its not hard its just frustrating and boring. You have a choice of 2 weapons and only one of them is worth using as it instantly travels so you don't have to lead the target as much (which is next to impossible to do against multiple targets with no tracking system and terrible slow ship with no lineal control methods, you can go forwards or backwards and slowly turn (No up/down or strafing manoeuvres. It makes space combat no fun at all.

Space Ships:

Every single ship is EXACTLY the same! The only difference is the model used for it and how many slots it has. They all move at the same speed (slow), they all have the same manoeuvrability (poor). They all use the same upgrades (which you cant transfer so have to rebuild every single time you upgrade to a new ship). There is no way to add more slots, no way to really increase speed or handling (there are upgrades that do this but even stacking 4 or 5 of them doesn't make it any better). There is no way to customise what your ship looks like or feel like. The upgrades do work but not in a way that feels special.

Planet combat:

Your multitool can fire a beam, "bullets" or grenades. To be fair there are quite a few interesting upgrades for each variant but it is still basically a choice of 3 weapons and you can only really pick one as you only have 1 multitool. If you want to switch between them then you have to sacrifice upgrades or destroy and recraft them any time you want to switch it up (which is not fun).

Planet Generation:

The planets are generally amazing to look at (despite the fact that the loading in of them is horrible as you fly over them, even with max settings). I would love to spend hours exploring each planet as they are very beautiful, there is sadly just no reason to do so )other than to look at the scenery).

The whole planet type thing is pointless, Radioactive, hot, cold, it all plays exactly the same and has no baring on anything (such as animal generation, frequency of storms, resource generation, etc). Yes you can get suit upgrades to be more effective in each planet type but as you can't move them about they just take up space in your suit inventory. Seeing as there is no incentive to walk around exploring anyway most of the time you will be using your ship to jump from one thing to another.

Every planet "feels" the same. Why is the gravity the same on every planet? The "base" terrain only has a few options, why do none of these planets have massive mountains or long, deep canyons? Why no dense forest? Why no water planets? I want to feel like i'm exploring different alien planets, what it feel like now is that I'm exploring the same planet with a different set of models attached to the same basic code (which is exactly what it is).

UI and Game interface:

Oh NMS interface why do you hate the people using you so much. I can only assume that it was made in this way as a form of punishment.

Selecting an item or menu option involves holding the mouse button down for 1-2 seconds. Why? no reason, just to make navigating menus, opening containers and doing things slow as hell.

You want to buy a new ship which has a couple of extra slots? Enjoy not being able to transfer any of the upgrades you have spent ages crafting for your current ship. You have to destroy them all (losing resources in the process) and then rebuild them all on the new ship. Same goes for the multitool. Gets even more annoying with the high end tech items which use harder to find/more expensive components.

Why the hell cant "companion items" be moved? Every ship and multitool upgrade you make means re-crafting every companion item you had attached within it. You can't even move it within the same inventory so if you build an upgrade in the middle of the inventory where you don't want it then you have to destroy it and rebuild it in the slot that you want it in. What kind of idiot thought that not allowing the user to rearrange their inventory without destroying and rebuilding items (and losing resources in the process) was a good gameplay design feature?

Why cant I build a bunch of suit upgrades and move thme to my ship storage, then I can customise my suit to fit in with whatever planet I'm on. For example I have a bunch of stuff that lets me stay under water for longer, I will never, ever build it because I rarely go Same for the multitool, Want to mine a bunch I can drop some of my combat upgrades in the ship or exosuit and then put in mining ones, BUT NO you want to switch things up you have to destroy what you have and start over.

EVERY SINGLE TIME I go into a room with an NPC it moves my camera too it. This was cinematic the first 2 times, the 50th time in a building that is actually the same as the other 50, with an NPC in exactly the same spot, is just annoying. Same goes for the 5 seconds camera pan everytime I click on a save beacon and the annoying letterbox overscan everytime I get some new milestone that I couldn't give two hoots about.

Crafting:

The UI for crafting upgrades sucks but so does finding new recipes. I love the idea of going out and exploring to find new tech but because its the same 3 or 4 buildings over and over again it drains the fun. Also having to keep stockpiles of resources on hand at all times to recraft all your upgrades if you want to change tool/ship sucks. I want more options to be able to get recipes. I want to be able to trade for them, fight people for them, research them, combine them together to create something new. As it stand right now its grinding landing at multiple outposts, etc and hoping you will find something useful.

Summary:

This is not a beta game, it is a "finished" product with a AAA price tag. For £40 I expect more. If this was a £20 game I would probably still not be happy but would be a little more accepting. Yes there might be more features coming in updates but that is not acceptable. In a £40 game I expect more than 2 hours of unique gameplay.

I would love to see:

More animals and more interesting behaviour. Look at ARK for example, loads of groups of different animals that interact with each other and have different behaviours. I want to see GIANT animals that make me run for my life. I want to be able to collect some and use them for research or cross breed/genetically splice them together then introduce them to a new planet and see if they survive. I want to make a cat sized bouncing blob of purple goo my pet and call him squishy and have him follow me through my space adventures.

I want to be able to REALLY explore planets, I want unique and interesting buildings/areas on them that are different to every other planet and are more than just a place to put a loot container.

I want to be able to move upgrades between inventories. I want more than 2 ship weapons and 3 multitool options. I want to be able to customise my ship, suit and multitool layouts without having to destroy and rebuild everything all the time.

I want space ships to fly like spaceships and not blimps.

I want every spaceship to be different, some are fast, some have better shields, some have more slots to store minerals, some give you bonuses to mining. There are so many possibilities.

I want each planet to FEEL different, different gravity, different effects, much different terrain generation, animal generation to be effected by planet stats, etc. Make it feel real and alive, not the same thing with different models on.

I want to customise my ship, let me at least paint it a different colour, let me buy/build extra slots. Let me sell it or store it when I switch rather then just abandoning it.

I want to be able to have multiple ships and the ability to switch between them, even more so if ships are not all the same. Even if they stay boring being able to have one ship specifically loaded for combat and another for mining would be immersive and fun.

To be fair, I'm happy with this finished product and didn't expect anything different. Hell my only concern was having a troll find me and constantly mine what I wanted or even worse just like the Ark - randomly kill me for kicks. Randomly destroy what I spent hours to create just for kicks....

As for the giant creatures they are few but I've already found two planets (one last night) with pretty huge creatures that tower over me. Although there is no real sense of danger with them - again though I'm not far enough through the game plus I've upgraded my self so much that I hopefully can handle anything.

For the ship difference, found one last night. Upgrade my ship to one I found and the targeting compared to my old one is crap. I've gone from being able to take down 3 pirate ships with ease, to struggling to hit one (no joke) I had to run from every single engagement. Customisation I didn't expect but to be honest I wouldn't complain about it missing either.

Didn't expect to be able to breed animals etc but I wouldn't complain if it was added - even though I have no interest in it.

Agreed on the exploring facilities and having a gun fight - even if it was 1/10 I visited. Then again this game doesn't seem to be orientated by heavy combat situations.

As for planets I think they need tweaking not a lot of work, gravity is a nice idea. I don't agree though, I think they do feel different (lost count how many I've visited) and even the weather effects are interesting.

Multiple ships - again I wouldn't complain about this but I didn't expect it.

To be honest as I said I think this is a finished product, I never believe fully what I see in trailers because they are usually the "best bits" rolled in to one. If you've not experienced everything I can understand your frustrations but for randomly generated planets you're unlikely going to see everything in the game in a few days or perhaps weeks - let alone over night.

I just find it strange how other games can be released same price, lack severe content after 7 hours of game play, rarely fully matches with the trailers - yet this game is getting a heavy about of flack. I guess because I knew this was from a small company and a small team compared to blockbusters, I never expected anything. From the moment this game info was released I though yay MineCraft in space - minus the building.

To me it just seems people wanted things that wasn't even in the trailers or released info, yet are not happy that they have yet to see some of the stuff that's in this "huge" game. Don't get me wrong, the majority of what you put I actually would like/love to see but I didn't expect it all that in this game. Plus I still want to be able to build, have a home world I can have for my self and non touchable by others etc. I just simply didn't expect it in this game.

One thing I will fully agree with is when you reach 20+ it is repetitive but I kind of expected that then again, I've not rushed to finish the game so everything I do is almost a repeat.

Also water planets - again found one the other night. More water than land pretty much, was my first that had more than just a few rivers. Was strange exploring caves that then went under water (didn't find anything useful in it though). The planet I was on last night had plenty of lakes where life seemed to be around more so than the main land. I get what you are saying though, there needs to be more of an "individual" feeling to it. Was never going to be that way for a massive generated universe by a company/team that size - if it was - I would have been shocked/surprised beyond belief.

I can understand many people might be unhappy if they feel they have been misled about what the game was going to contain.

Personally I hadn't really followed too much of the hype - I knew for a long time that it was coming out but didn't check into it in to much detail (mainly as I've been burnt by early hype before - Landmark / EQNext for example + Archeage)

For a long time I haven't really enjoyed the style of most games (mmos are just about quest hub to quest hub, and many games are just about owning people lol)

I was looking for a much more exploration based game with a lot less combat required (I thought Elite Dangerous might be good but I don't really enjoy the complex flying and the combat isn't fun for me)

I've been so happy with my £40 purchase (I've played about 14 hours so far and still only on my 6th System lol) and I will even be happy to pay for DLC's if they add extra features (that don't include PvP)

It may be a shallow game to many people (and this might show that I have shallow requirements in a game lol) but the relaxed exploration nature of the game with the randomness (and lack of linear quest nature) of the gameplay is exactly what I want.

People also keep saying that the game is repetitive having to do the same things each time (and mention that many planets are very similar) but the last few evenings I've played on the same planet (to farm and find drop pods) and each time something different and unexpected has happened to me (like last night getting lost in a cave hiding from sentinels and having to blast my way to the surface lol)

It's a game that isn't for everyone but some people will really enjoy it like I do (but isn't this like most games?)

I've played this game for 17 hours and whilst I still find it addictive some things are starting to grate...it's the little things like

You can't look around whilst flying ship which makes landing annoying.

Storage seems too limiting, alien artifacts don't stack and then you can't find somewhere to sell them. I suppose you could return to the space station. Hope it's not too far away.

Also the power cells and the like don't stack. I always throw them away.

Rare minerals don't seem to appear on all planets so you find something rare, can you afford the space between upgrades, stuff you need to survive and artifacts?

I've mostly avoided ship and suit upgrades to maximise space.

This is kind of my thinking, to me people seem to have wanted a Star Citizen meets MineCraft kind of world - or as you mentioned Elite Dangerous. I think that's where people feel misled but I think that's more of their own hype. Like you I didn't pay attention to any comment pieces only what was officially released so I didn't follow the hype train. The second I saw this game I was like okay.. MineCraft in space.. seems pretty good. Small team/budget I immediately guessed it wasn't going to be "special". I think the big mistake people are making is they are comparing this game to the likes of Elite Dangerous instead of what is primarily is - Exploring the Universe. And considering that the majority of it is auto generated it's never going to feel too different from one planet, system or even caves to another.

Having played many Open World games: Ark, Solus, Space Engineers (wishlist/library is full of them) this one comes closest to what I enjoy. Still miles away from what I would really want, I gave up with Star Citizen due to the hefty delays and spending £50 on something I can't even play fully yet. Can I complain about £40 on this ? I've gained more hours than I would have through most other games...

Still I don't blame people for being angry but.. if you allow your self to be hyped. A lot of what people are complaining about was never promised.
