[ipad] Broadcasting ipad video to 1 computer.

Hi Guys,

 

one of the schools I work in wants to use live video from an ipad to help teachers with lessons. They (with the permission of the teacher) want to be able to view the live lesson out of the room, and give feedback back via an earpiece to the teacher.

 

At the moment they have used a Swivl base and recorded lessons for playback later. Has anyone else got a similar setup at their school? We have looked at iris, but it seemed to be pretty steep...

You can use something like AirServer for this. It broadcasts what's on the iPad's screen to a PC or Mac.

you could use something like an apple tv or airserver to watch the ipad screen remotely and i supose skype and a headset to relay info to the teacher . Just spitballing i havnt tried it)

As in they defiantly want to use an iPad to take video of the lesson, or they just want some kind of camera they can put in the classroom to remotely see what's going on? Any CCTV-type camera should do it, we use UniFi CCTV cameras at around £150 each. For something a bit snazzier, and maybe a bit more portable, I've got on quite well with the Kodak SP360 4K, a "360 degree" camera (actually around a 235 degree field of view unless you have two-camera setup). It has an iPad app available that allows you to view live footage via wireless, which it renders in human-"normal" 120 degree field of view, letting you move the viewpoint around the scene. Cost around £300, which isn't bad, and with a USB power brick and a small monopod it makes a good portable setup you can place into a classroom quite discreetly.

If you're using Skype for audio, why not use it for video too instead of AirServer?

so the kids dont hear the audio feedback to the teacher mainly

 

though granted now i engage brain you could do that with skype and a camera and a bluetooth headset using the class pc

What you are describing is IRIS Connect- we have it here. Very expensive though!

We have an Iris Connect too, and knowing the price tag of it, I understand why they're trying to find alternative ways of doing it...

Or just setup a raspberry pi. Cheap and will easily cope with this. [emoji6]

I agree about price but it is made to be as little hassle for teachers as possible! The more technical it is the more work you are going to have to do to support it..

Ours is used all the time and i rarely ever support it.

Really? Who sets it up, connects it to the network, gets the viewing laptop ready, etc? Do the teachers do all that stuff themselves?

You do the initial set up of the ipad when first purchased but after that they set it up themselves. They then log into the online interface to view it after recording and uploading it through the app and choose to share it or not. I supported it once when it was first purchased so I could get my head around it but I haven't had any involvement in it since!

Do you ever have staff watching live or only ever watching recordings?

 

Also, iPad?? We have a laptop dedicated for it - is there an iPad app now?

nah it records to their platform then the teacher who signs in can watch it back.

Yeah the latest model has two ipads and a mount with a tracker. Teacher wears a mic with the tracker on and the ipad follows them around the room. Once the lesson is completely they upload the video to the platform and watch back from then.

 

The recording are only accessible by the person who signed into the ipads to record. After they have uploaded they can choose to share with other users on IRIS Connect.

 

Teachers can also download the app onto their own ipads and use it that way.

Sounds much nicer than the version we've got - ours looks like a drip stand in a hospital, you put that in the corner of the room then set up a laptop to control it, move the camera, etc. and start recording. The recording goes to an upload box in our server room and from there to Iris, where the users then log in and view/share.
