[sims] Clearing some space...

Hello All,

 

I have an impending space issue on our S:\ and have noticed a large set of data appears to be duplicated. See attached shot of directory stats:

We recently upgrade to SQL 2014/SOLUS 3. Can I remove the folders that reference SIMS2008R2? Should I be careful what I'm doing here?

Tread relatively carefully!

 

Looks like you've still got the old version of SQL running judging by the timestamps on the folders - is that right?

 

If so, stop the SQL 2008R2 services, and make sure that SIMS is happy and working - run a report, search, etc.

 

If all is happy, then you can uninstall the old version of SQL and remove those folders.

I would call capita support and ask them to help you get rid of your duplicate files and folders. Ideally back it up to a External HDD and if anything happens your can restore the files back easily

Simple task in theory but can become complicated as there are different databases for differnet things that are related to sims that may be installed in the same sims instance eg discover, solus3,fms etc. In theory as capita no longer support 2008r2 all your database should now be on 2012/2014.

First log into sims2008r2 instance and note all the databases present and their database locations on the server

Confirm In the data folder you have an mdf and ldf of every database within the sql instance (if they have all been installed to the default location).

Finally Check and double check whether they are still being used.

Next log on to sql instance sims2014 and confirm the database locations. Check that every database has been migrated to sims2014 instance.

 

Once you are sure of what databases are active used in which instance you can stop the instance service within services.

Copy the mdf and ldf of that database to another location off the server then uninstall that database from that instance.

 

I recommend if you not comfortable seek advice from capita before proceeding. And if you do proceed make sure you have all the backups you are comfortable with having.

If you want a quick short term fix remove the backups in your 2014 instance to another location. That will give you 6gb nearly back immediately. Do the same in your 2008r2 instance which is another 1gb.

Note if you want to ever restore from one of these backups you will need to copy the bak file back to it original position
