Adding Windows 10 to KMS on Windows Server 2008 R2

As the title suggests we are trying to add in the Windows 10 KMS key so that we can activate clients using our Windows 2008 R2 KMS host. I read somewhere that we need a hotfix so I installed that. No dice. I read somewhere else that 2008 R2 is no longer supported for Windows 10.

 

Can anyone step me through how I can add Windows 10 to our 2008 R2 KMS host? Or is it indeed no longer supported on 2008 R2?

Imply you need a "Windows Srv 2012R2 DataCtr/Std KMS for Windows 10" key, because the key you're using needs to be good for both the Server 2012R2 *and* Windows 10.

I don't have "Windows Srv 2012R2 DataCtr/Std KMS for Windows 10" listed in VLSC only "Windows 10 Education"

That was the update. In the link you refer to it states :

No - ignore that bit, it's inaccurate. Once you've installed the hotfix you can then use the "Windows Srv 2012R2 DataCtr/Std KMS for Windows 10" key in your 2008R2 KMS host.

Only the Windows 10 KMS

No Windows srv 2012 keys? You might need to have a quick chat with your MS reseller.

If you only have an EES, you may not have the key. Because we have an Academic Select (as well) and have purchased server licences through that we have the key.

Call up Microsoft and request they put the key on your agreement. I had to do this a few weeks ago.

MS call it "Windows Server 2012 R2 KMS for Windows 10". It installs fine into 2008 R2 (our KMS host is).

 

Sign in to VLSC, then:

Click on “Licenses" in the toolbar located under where it says “Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center” and then click on “Relationship Summary”

Click on the Agreement ID related to this inquiry.

The Details Page will appear and in the middle of the page should show another toolbar. Click on “Product Keys”

A list of your product keys associated to this agreement will appear.

Look for Windows Server 2012 R2 KMS for Windows 10. If it's not there, email [email protected] giving agreement number etc, ideally from your VLSC email address.

With my EES agreement I didn't get server keys, so I had to pay something like £39 to add them on.

 

I then installed Hyper V on my 2008 R2 box and installed 2012 R2. I then made the VM my KMS server. ET VOILA!

I had to do the run-around phoning them up in order to get the Windows Srv 2012R2 DataCtr/Std KMS for Windows 10 keys added, too. Seems Microsoft don't give them out by default any more (though we didn't have to pay for them)

 

It's worth noting that ISOs downloaded from VLSC do not require a product key. If you install with no product key their default behaviour is to search the network for a KMS. You only need to give them a product key (such as a MAK) if it's going off-site for a while.
