cpjitservices Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 Hi all, I have x2 UPS's... both 3000VA versions rack mount with the front display. One has an NMC card in it, im trying to get it setup. I've followed the online guides. The model of the card is APC 9617. Have reset the card, it has an IP... but the webpage keeps asking for A username & password. From what I Can see online it should be 'apc - apc' which ive tried to no avail... ive also tried device - apc. Telnet says connection refused. I cant seem to connect to the UPS via console cable either (the one that came with it). Nothing is displayed on the session after pressing enter repeatedly. Anyone any ideas ? Thanks!
ChrisH Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 You need to concentrate on trying to get the console cable working as that will allow you to do anything. Are you sure your connection speed is set correctly?
cpjitservices Posted June 22, 2016 Author Posted June 22, 2016 Well im not entirely sure of the speed, Apparently its 2400,1,8,N but nothing on that.. changing to 9600 doesnt work either.
ChrisH Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 Have you tried the reset sequence? The port maybe disabled but if you press the reset using the right procedure it usually gives you access for a minute or something if something is disabled etc.

pantscat Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 I seem to remember APC had a special serial cable that had to be used - a standard 9-pin one wouldn't do the trick.

pantscat Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 Apparently this is the process to recover a lost password: How to Recover from a Lost Password You can use a local computer, a computer that connects to the Management Card through the serial port at the Management Card’s UPS or expansion chassis, to access the control console. 1. Select a serial port at the local computer and disable any service which uses that port. 2. Unless an APC smart-signaling cable (940-0024 or 940-1524) is already connected to the selected port, connect the smart-signaling cable that came with the Management Card to the selected port and to the serial port at the Management Card’s UPS or chassis. 3. Run a terminal program (such as HyperTerminal) and configure the selected port for 2400 bps, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control, and save the changes. 4. Press ENTER to display the User Name prompt. 5. Press the Reset button on the Management Card, which causes the Management Card to restart, a process that typically takes five to ten seconds. 6. Press ENTER as many times as necessary to redisplay the User Name prompt, then use apc for the User Name and Password. (If you take longer than 30 seconds to log on after the User Name prompt is redisplayed, you must repeat steps 4 and 5.) 7. From the Control Console menu, select System, then User Manager. 8. Select Administrator, and change the User Name and Password settings, both of which are now defined as apc. 9. Press CTRL-C and log off. You must perform the entire procedure (log on, change the user name and password, and log off) within two minutes so that you are not logged off for inactivity. If you are logged off automatically, the new settings will not take effect, and you must repeat the entire procedure from the beginning.
pantscat Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 Indeed and in some cases the wrong cable will turn the UPS off which I have first hand experience of Nice little 'feature' that...
cpjitservices Posted June 22, 2016 Author Posted June 22, 2016 Yippp tried that, I cant get connected to Console at all. Screen stays black on putty.
pantscat Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 Flow control off? Turned off buffers on the serial port?
cpjitservices Posted June 22, 2016 Author Posted June 22, 2016 Flow control off? Turned off buffers on the serial port? Yes flow control off... remind me how to turn off buffers ?
pantscat Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 In device manager right-click on the serial port and there should be an option under properties to turn off the buffers - this can sometimes cause problems with serial connections.
pantscat Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 Hmm. Shout at it and threaten it with violence. Does your serial port definitely work ok? Can you connect to something else to make sure?
cpjitservices Posted June 22, 2016 Author Posted June 22, 2016 The air has been blue ... trust me Havent got anything to connect to via it at the moment, I might just fit a serial card in and try again! Thanks
Blue_Cookeh Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 I cant remember which one (really sorry!!) but one of these worked when we had a brand new NMC to install in an APC UPS. administrator / administrator administrator / apc admin / apc
cpjitservices Posted June 22, 2016 Author Posted June 22, 2016 I cant remember which one (really sorry!!) but one of these worked when we had a brand new NMC to install in an APC UPS. administrator / administrator administrator / apc admin / apc Thanks, after some thought and deliberation.. I unplugged the NMC from the network and could still ping the address so I think what I was trying to log into wasnt my UPS... My NMC seems to not be picking up an IP. Need to get consoled in to the UPS itself. To which ive had no avail so far.
ellsandell Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 Pretty sure the APC network cards get an IP via DHCP (If they haven't been configured in the past). Is the card getting power? Status LED - OFF means the card is not receiving power or is in a boot up state. - Solid Green means that the card has valid IP settings. - Solid Orange means that the card has a hardware failure. - Flashing Green means that the card does not have a valid IP settings. - Flashing Orange means that the card is making a BootP request - Rapidly Alternating Green and Orange means the card is booting up. - Slowly Alternating Green and Orange means the card is making a DHCP request Link LED - OFF means that there is not power, the network cable is not connected, or the device such as a switch or a hub connected to the card is not active - Solid Green means that the card is communicating at 10mbps. - Solid Orange means that the card is communicating at 100mbps. - Flashing Green means that the card is receiving data packets at 10mbps. - Flashing Orange means that the card is receiving data packets at 100mbps.
cpjitservices Posted June 22, 2016 Author Posted June 22, 2016 Well we have inherited the AP6917, so it might of been setup by one of our old teccies a few years back but details have been forgotten now. Yep Card has power, Status light solid green, Network light blinking away at me! Holding reset button turns Status LED off then you press it again to reset it... it flashes between amber and Green when requesting an IP. Solid Green means TCP/IP is set up. Can't see any leases in my DHCP servers for the card.
cpjitservices Posted June 23, 2016 Author Posted June 23, 2016 Right, Laptop - Switch - UPS... found the IP of the card. Now logged in.
