HP IMC

Dear all,

 

I would like some advice on suitable simple software for network switch management. I only want the basics, automatic detection of switches, network map (with ports used for interconnect), and VLANs.

 

Has any one used HP IMC? Any thoughts?

Hate the new one if I'm honest, horrible layout, slow and just missing lots of features. The old PCM was lovely and was looking to buy that here but after trialing ICM certainly won't be looking to get it if I'm honest

There may be some freebie Linux version out there you can try. Maybe nework notepad??

 

IMC is a great powerfull product but maybe too much for most networks, we use it here but we have about 50 edge switches and 2 cores to look after

I'm planning to install Spiceworks Network Monitor (free); we already use the helpdesk which works well.

 

Setting up and running a trial of IMC is on my (lower priority) to-do list.

 

We have a relatively large but un-monitored network and I'm hoping one of the above will do a similar job to the OP's requirements for me.

There is a 60 free trial of IMC available. If you like it you can just buy the licence from a VAR then keep using it so you only have to set it up once. It is a very capable piece of software. It can manage a lot of non HP kit too. Just make sure that you can set the SNMP strings in your switches for IMC to discover them correctly.

I've found HP IMC to be really useful for monitoring our switches. We also use it to backup and deploy switch configuration as well as rolling out firmware updates.
