SIMS 32bit vs 64bit

Dear all,

 

Running SOLUS3. I some 64 bit machines, some that have installed SIMS to the 'Program Files' directory and some to the 'Program Files (x86)' directory, why is this? Are there 64 and 32 bit versions of SIMS? How do I tell SOLUS to choose one over another?

Only 32-bit, I've found that SIMS doesn't play well with 64bit systems when updating, so you'll probably have 2 copies, one in each program files directory.

Because Capita can't program their way out of a paper bag, they're using hard coding paths I assume, which is also why SRP breaks if you don't include the path rule as well the the default registry based rules.

 

Don't think it matters really.

 

I've found on one machine parts of sims in one place, parts in the other.

Nope, only one instance.

 

All installs and updates are now controlled by SOLUS3 and updates have been going through ok...

 

Any other ideas?

Problem is I now have three variables of install path and causing issues with my shortcuts:

 

64: program files

64: program files (x86)

32: program files

 

Means I can't do a, 'if 64 bit', go here...

All of my SIMS installs go into Program Files (x86), so long as the machine did not have SIMS on it prior to SOLUS 3, i.e. if it's a relatively new build. SOLUS 2 used to deploy SIMS to "Program Files" even on 64 bit machines, and this stuck after upgrading to SOLUS 3. With a new build, that isn't the case for me.

 

Check your SOLUS 3 deployment settings under:

 

Environment->Configure Workstations->sims.ini-->SIMS installation

It matters for Personnel links to FMS. You have to specify the path to SIMS which is a GLOBAL setting in the FMS database. If it's pointing to C:\Program Files, but you;ve got some machines with it installed to Program Files (x86), then the links between SIMS and FMS will not work if FMS is used on those devices causing all kinds of issues.

 

If you have a mixed 32bit /64 bit estate, always install to C:\Program Files on ALL devices (easy if you;re using SOLUS3 as you can manually specify the master install directory in the SOLUS 3 UI). If you are running a fully x64 estate, then you can install to C:\Program Files (x86) without issues.

We use 64-bit only and have done for a minimum of 4 years. Never had any issues.

We have the same problems. We just have a 32bit and 64 icon on our user start menus.

The issue is i believe that if the PC had sims installed from non solus and so was in the program files folder. Solus will keep installing the new versions to there. If solus is doing a fresh install it will use the correct path of program files (x86). You could try un-installing on the program files machines and then attempt a new install via solus however there maybe something in the registry still pointing to that incorrect path meaning it will install back there.

Nothing in the registry, instead it's in the file C:\Windows\SIMS.ini on the workstations. Make sure the line is:

 

SIMSDotNetDirectory=C:\Program Files (x86)\SIMS\SIMS .net

 

Once you change this, SOLUS 3 will install to the new directory and ignore the old. You can push this modified file out using GPP to all workstations, but you'll have two SIMS folders unless you delete the old one too.

We got round the issue by making a directory junction in the base image for 64 bit workstations

 

cd "C:\Program Files"

mklink /J SIMS "C:\Program Files (x86)\SIMS"
