Replacing DC

Hi,

 

My DC is on its last legs, HW fault and in 6 weeks were getting new and shiny VM solution (currently all physical)

 

Got a spare old tower server so built a DC to be a replacement for failing one.

 

Anyone simply explain how I replace the old one with the new one and keep the old name and IP rather than have a different DC name or is that not possible?

If I demote it can I rename it to the same name as old one, change IP to old one (while not wired in), turn off old one and turn on new.

 

Any pointers to easiest way would be much appreciate.

It is recommended to have 2 DCs as a minimum so if you only have one then create another 2, when you do the install it will give an option to link them together.

 

Once done, decommission the old DC and rename / re-IP one of the other DCs back to the old one (worked for me)

You can just rename / change ip of the new one once the old one is changed/turned off.

 

make sure you transfer the fsmo roles to the new one
