ITIL

Hi All

 

Whenever i have been looking at jobs lately (i like to see whats around...) I usually see ITIL mentioned. I understand it's a framework about best practice etc, but i have only had one Job in IT so far, and it has never been mentioned... Just want to know how many people here have certificates in it etc, or whether there are people, like me, who have generally had no involvement with it whatsoever.

I have the basic qualification. I thought the course was really good. I had everyone on my team go on it afterwards (even my boss at the time).

was it a one day thing? Work do currently want me to take some training soon, but they also don't want me out on a week long course or anything.

I have been in IT........ well lets say a long time! and until I moved from the small/ med size networks of schools and colleges I had not seen it but when I started looking to move to large environments in universities that's when I came across it. Although I had not sat an exam it was useful to have picked up a book and got the broad strokes of it before rocking up to an interview!. This helped in my move to the uni where I am now, from there they have since sent me on the foundation ITIL course as they do with all IT Services staff here. It is useful for getting an understanding in to how larger environments are run and I would recommend it if that's what you are looking at doing right now, if I had known about it before I would have used some of its principals on the smaller environments that I was in charge of in the past. It can be done self study, but I believe you have to attend a centre to take the exam, although I'm willing to be proved wrong on this.

 

ITIL is essentially a way of doing things and helps to ensure nothing falls through the cracks in a large environment.

 

It is seriously acronym heavy so if you struggle with that sort of learning you might need to self study a load as well as do the course to make sure its all committed to memory!
