Sheridan Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 That's always going to be the case. Even when LTSB+1 is released it's going to have bugs which have since been fixed in Redstone+1/+2. I guess thats the point of LTSB! But I think Win10 was rushed out in all forms, so none of them were fully ready for general use.

Time and time again they have said LTSB is for highly available devices that don't change such as ATMs, PoS machines etc. They have forced Education on us by taking away Enterprise licensing from EES. They probably haven't given us an Education LTSB edition because it doesn't align with their business, and it keeps their SKU count down. If I'm installing a piece of Digital Signage in our school? LTSB. If I'm deploying an IT suite? Education. On our Volume Licensing page we are licensed for both education and Enterprise LTSB. education is full of so much rubbish and un-necessary items, i'm thinking odeploying LTSB in the long run if I can ever get the start menu working nicely, but is proving to be difficult.

If they removed all the crap off education expect Edge and gave us a similar version to LTSB then maybe we would push out something other than LTSB.

Likewise - They're probably telling you that because they want us to use the features which most education establishments wouldn't use anyway. Why do you need Cortana on a desktop PC in a classroom?!

Was along the lines that LTSB is built for critical infrastructure not general purpose machines, also that as new features come along that we may want LTSB deployments will be lagging behind. I guess it's the Office 365 approach with being continuously updated vs. the "old school" thinking of deploying a particular version and sticking to it. I did once again moan about the Candy Crush etc. being in the build and even the MS people themselves can't defend that, decisions made in other parts of the business much higher up. At the moment I'm waiting on 1608 when it gets released, running the junk apps removal scripts then deploying with policies etc. to disable the rest of the unwanted stuff. Oddly when I talk to vendors about projects they all sound either a) surprised or b) dismissive of how bad I think the logon times are with Win10. Perhaps they don't do many new profile logins but since when did a minute-and-a-half become acceptable performance to set up a profile? Edited July 12, 2016 by gshaw

We see what happens on the ground, vendors only see half and their staff possibly only logon once a day so 1m 30secs is seconds out the day. 1608 will still have 24 apps which need removing.

The first Redstone-based LTSB build (i.e. the forthcoming Anniversary update) will contain bugs that have been fixed in the second Redstone build (Anniversary +1) and whatever comes after it (+2) since the LTSB build won't receive feature updates until the next LTSB build is released in 2-3 years time. LTSB Gets all security updates, what it dosent get is feature updates, we have had window10 a year now and none of the important bugs have been fixed... i wont be worrieing about falling far behind

NB9457 Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Got to say, I've tried using the education version, but it just wasn't playing nice, having issues with apps, even when installed, the feature updates, are they really needed? I've personally been using Win8 and 10 since Beta and I can honestly say, I've never used the App Store or any of the tiles, if I want that kind of interface or experience, I'll use my tablet. I'm another on the LTSB boat, it's been pretty painless, it's played well with all our hardware and software, plus logon times are quicker too. We don't miss any of the features and the staff haven't requested any, so just security updates on LTSB will see me fine until at least next summer!

Where you'll effectively be running an operating system that is missing 5 years worth of new features. Features that may or may not be required for whatever cloud services and technologies MS decide to be running in the future. At that point in time I can see people who are on LTSB starting to make the move to the CB version. Personally I'm hoping that CB be better in five years time and less obnoxious and that it's worth waiting to move.
