TwistedHelixis Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 I have a couple 2012r2 hosts at a couple of primary schools and wondered (theoretically) how many 2012r2 virtual servers I could run on the hosts based just on the processors. These are the processors in each server Intel Xeon E5-2430 v2 2.50GHz, 15M Cache, 7.2GT/s QPI, Turbo, 6C, 80W, Max Mem 1600MHz Intel Xeon E5-2620 v3 2.4GHz,15M Cache,8.00GT/s QPI,Turbo,HT,6C/12T (85W) Max Mem 1866MHz Thanks for you time.
rrrrr Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Its more ram and hdd size/speed that are more of a concern when it comes to hosting virtual servers. What functions will the virtual servers be doing?
TwistedHelixis Posted May 18, 2016 Author Posted May 18, 2016 Currently have data vm and dc vm but wanted to move our remote access server over and maybe add another. Got at least 20gb of mem and enough hdd space for a couple more vms but was curious how many Vms the processors could take without breaking a sweat or causing any slowdown.
rrrrr Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Monitor the cpu usage of the host with current workload and cpu usage of the remote access server during busiest times and base it on that. Cpu usage fluctuates alot. Can go from 0% to 100% instantly depending on what the server is doing. Ram and hdd usage are much more consistent so are more important to look at.
Norphy Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 There is no way anyone can really answer this question with any kind of definitive answer. It could host dozens which do next to nothing or a couple which are heavily loaded.
