MikeGreen Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Afternoon All, I am thinking about removing our CC4 Network and wondered what things I would need to consider. I know the obvious (computer builds package assignment etc.) but wondered if anyone else has gone through this and may know what to watch out for or any advice on avoiding any pitfalls. Kind regards
AXE Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 It sounds daunting but... Create a new OU in Active Directory with only a small subset of policies. Run a script to remove all of the CC4 software on a workstation. After moving the workstation to the new OU, reboot and start testing. Keep in mind that there are things you'll lose, like.. printer and drive mapping, start menu shortcut delivery, automated build and software installation.. but then there are alternatives available for all of those tasks. 1
tomo1095 Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Burn it down and start from scratch! On a totally genuine note though, we're considering this here too. Can you create a new DC? - The way I think I'd do it is to pretty much to start from scratch, with a new DC and a small selection of PC's being imaged from scratch. Then a gradual move over once everything seems fine. Drive and printer mappings won't be hard with group policy and log on scripts.
Haptic Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Hi @MikeGreen we're helping a good number of Schools move to Google away from CC4/RM Network Infrastructure. If you think it would help we could always put you in touch with one/some of them to uncover any potential issues/benefits/pitfalls. All is going excellent thus far Joe
steve_forbes Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 Hi, We here at RM can also help remove CC4, in fact we have just created a service to do exactly that for schools where CC4 is no longer the right tool for their situation. We can remove the CC4 software and leave you with your mappings etc in place. Before anyone jumps to conclusions, this doesn't mean the end of CC4 - we are just recognising that depending on the school's circumstances and goals there may be times when an alternative solution is preferred. Likewise if you want a greenfield vanilla network then we can also help with that as well as migration to cloud services such as Office 365 and Google. Let me know if you would like any more details. Thanks Steve
nathan3388 Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 We did this about 10 years ago at the high school i am at, then we also did the same down 5 local primary school. We just took on thing at a time decommissioned the services one by one, then transferred them to the new server. We used Hyper V and installed a separate server for main roles e.g.: DC1, email, build server, File store, Print server, etc. The main thing to watch out for is testing the software that you have now will work with the system that you are putting in place. if you want any advice give me a PM
Pashers Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 I second tomo1095 - We started from scratch. We started with Citrix infratstructure on RM in a seperate OU to slow transition over to vanilla, but then moved to vanilla. Had two networks side by side for a short period. Then just started from scratch, new passwords for all etc. steve_forbes - is RM aiming to help schools with vanilla networks as well as RM? Or just to move away? Just curious
MikeGreen Posted May 20, 2016 Author Posted May 20, 2016 Thanks for all of the Replies, We are starting with making lists and looking at what we would need in terms of replacing what RM Does on the network. I may call upon your experience again down the line. But thank you to everyone for the comments.
steve_forbes Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 (edited) @Pashers We are aiming to help schools with Vanilla networks as well as CC4 networks. We can already install and support Vanilla networks and have done in many large projects where CC4 was not the right fit for the school. Moving forwards we will be looking to add more vanilla based tools and services as well as continuing to develop and invest in CC4 for those customers who do continue to use the software in their school. Clearly we will also be focussing on cloud technologies such as IaaS (Microsoft Azure) and SaaS (Office 365 and Google Apps for Education). We have just been awarded Premier Partner status with Google for all the good work that we have been doing in schools that have wanted to approach things differently and "Go Google", many of which have been CC4 customers in the past but have wanted to move to a more mobile and cloud based learning environment moving forwards. Cafanathaw Posted July 24, 2020 Posted July 24, 2020 Run a script to remove all of the CC4 software on a workstation. Do you have details of the script AXE ?
