Clients needing multiple keypresses to wake from sleep

Greetings,

 

I have a number of clients which to fully wake from sleep need multiple key presses. On the first press the client does wake up, I can hear the fans spin up and action from the drive activity light but the screen stays blank. On the second key press the screen wakes up and I can use the system as normal. There is no power management software installed and I'm seeing this across multiple models. I don't think it's the monitor power management either although I can't rule it out I suppose, however I can't alter that. Any suggestions as to the cause?

I guess you've tried switching the monitor on first, then waking to see if its the monitor? Also can you ping the PC when the screen is black or turn caps lock on and off? Would give you an idea if the OS was loaded or not.

Process of elimination maybe? On one that does this, change "Turn off display after" to "Never", and also make sure hibernate, hybrid sleep, sleep and turn off HD are not active. If that wakes, try enabling the ones you require and retest?

I setup a ping to one machine and it definitely woke after the first press as it responded to the ping, even though the screen didn't wake. I turned off the monitor and turned it back on again, still nothing. I pressed the same button again and the display came up. It seems that it wakes up fine if its within the first few minutes of sleep but when left for longer periods it's then that the problem seems to occur. That to me suggests it is some sort of power save option for the monitor although there are no configuration options for it. I have tried a different monitor (same range) and it happens on that one also.

yeah, I've seen this on various PCs. Wake it up with the mouse and I bet the image pops up straight away. I think it's a side affect of ignore mouse movements in power settings.
