SSD won't boot, but can see all files if connected to another machine

As above really - anyone got any ideas?

 

So far have tried:

 

DaRT: thinks it's a W7 installation (which it mat have been some time ago) and none of the tools do anything or say the drive is locked.

A disk regenerator program that has worked for me in the past.

I've even tried creating a VHD of the disk and booting that.

 

Wouldn't normally keep trying, but it's frustrating that I can see all the files/folders there but it just won't boot.

Forgot - tried that (assuming that's loads of "FixMBR" type commands).

complete long shot the laptop isnt a tosh r50 and the drive a crucial and you are trying to install 8.1/10 to it?

Not tried, but unlikely as all I get from it is a single "_" on a black screen. Will try (probably tomorrow).

 

It's a custom build HTPC and an OCZ drive. If the worst comes to the worst I've got an unused W7 license (so I can then upgrade to 10) but just don't fancy tweaking Plex and more to the point getting the IR receiver/decoder/translator that took me an age to set up to accept commands from my TV remote working again. I've got a Clonezilla backup from a couple of years back, but that won't apply (to a different disk).

in this case I would try Acronis if you have access to it and image the drive, then restore back to the SSD or a different disk and use 'Universal restore' which will reset all drivers to basic and it will then boot in any machine.

Think I've got a copy that came free with an SSD. Will give this a go if I have.

Looks like @sted may have solved it. Although I had tried all the bootrec stuff I'd found, I came across a different method here: https://www.boyans.net/RepairWindows/The_drive_where_Windows_is_installed_is_locked.html that I'm hopeful has worked (I got the Windows "pane" at least!). Going to refit it at home and check, if it seems OK I'll have a tidy up and then clone it ASAP to a new SSD to be on the safe side. Fingers crossed!

I was told that newer SSDs that sense a critical failure can go into read only mode, to enable you to recover files before you chuck it.

Thanks to everyone for their input and boyans.net for the fix. Managed to get it working and an image taken last night. Just tested the image on a random machine and all is good (apart from forgetting that Clonezilla doesn't like different sized disks), so hopefully will have time to stick a new SSD (same size, so should be good) in tonight and stick the image on it.

I wonder if it's a GPT format the FixMBR wouldn't work you'd need to recreate the boot partitions (too late now you fixed it, but just a thought)
