My money s on them not, and us either having to support outdated software, or constant arguments with teachers as their software stops working.

 

Its already happening with some of the old java websites that aren't being updated.

Apparently when they stop working its somehow our fault >.>

out of curiosity when i rebuilt a school from scratch over summer i purposely diddnt install java anywhere(bar servers that needed it for switches etc) and so far touch wood nobody has complained about it being missing

A lot of our maths and science departments it seem love to use some free java based websites.

Some haven't been updated since I was still in school.

There were even one or 2 that had been coded in the 90's, some physics refraction demo's I think.

The java update that forced higher security permissions broke them at first, then java 8 seemed to kill them off completely.

 

Just had wordle go down, equation buster is another favorite that dies everytime we update java

There's no way we'd get away with killing off java or flash anytime soon. If we did we'd have to pay to replace the software.

If we continue to install flash and java and they naturally become incompatible then its up to the department to replace it.

You can get it browser based if you ask them for the VLE version. They will upgrade for the cost of the media IIRC.

According to the linked article it isn't that it isn't supported, it's blocked by default and can be unblocked on a site-by-site basis so there is no reason for the companies to convert their flash content, or for teachers to move on and find a different site. Shame

As I am reimaging machines with Win 10 I am also not providing java. No complaints yet which is awesome

Hmmm... tempted to remove java now. We have papercut client that uses java though... will it still run without it?

Doing the same, thing are the Primary fingers crossed that no one needs it any more.

...Then you get Dell and CCTV 'web based' admin interfaces that require Java v4.3494483839393905874354832434, no lower, no higher to actually function!

 

Wiring up the whole building with the CCTV cameras probably takes less time than actually getting the web admin to work!

You remember correctly. Strange, I don't believe I have had an issue myself.

 

With regard to the repackaging software, the ones I have found to purchase cost quite a bit. AppDeploy has a free repackager, but I have had issues when capturing 64-Bit installations.

 

Could always introduce something like WPKG-gp (which is free ) to deploy software.

Yes, that's how you do it for Java, except you don't go to %TEMP%, you go to C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\LocalLow\Oracle\Java\jre*.*_**\ (jre*.*_**_x64 for the 64bit)

 

I fully welcome this decline of Flash Player. Microsoft have given an official EOL date, as have Google now. Apple are still picky about Flash with Safari, I expect they won't be too far behind cutting all support.

 

Issue is, kids here are being taught flash :/ By the time they leave school, that knowledge will be useless to them.

transferable skills? i cant imagine the tools for creating flash garbage are that much different from the ones for html5. Any "programming language" you teach in schools will probably be obsolete within 5 years anyway (just look at the ones ive "learned" over the years pascal/basic/visual basic/assembler/c and those are just the ones i can remember doing i probably couldnt write more than a few lines of code in any now but i have to hope its made vbs/powershell easier for me to get into)

Safari 10 will cut out Flash, as well as Java, Silverlight and Quicktime.
