Hi

 

I have noticed recently that my admin file server only has 25gb free on the users storage drive and as we are employing more staff soon then that is soon to get eaten so i have been looking at ways to increase this.

 

What i have

 

Admin File Server

D Drive - Staff Home Area/Profiles

E Drive - 2 Shares used by me full of software etc, General Admin Resource share and the SIMS share!

 

The E Drive has go about 150gb free on it and as i said before the D has 25gb free. In disk management they are showing as on the same physical disk, they are raid'd but i dont know what type.

 

What i wanted to know was if i could expand one partition and shrink the other on the file server and move my two shares to a new server. I have looked at SAN/NAS but my budget wont cut it.

 

Any thoughts or am i just being stupid!!

Have you looked at openfiler and using iSCSI?

I quite like the idea of getting a new server as i have 3 servers that are quite old so a spare would be an advantage; i just need to find out if i can move the partitions.

I haven't done it myself, but there are quite a few bootable disks which contain the tool 'ntfsresize' to allow the resizing of NTFS partitions. However, you should take a full backup before attempting anything like that.

If your disk is a dynamic volume then Windows will let you expand it, but it won't shrink it for you AFAIK.
