Default Printers.

Hi.

I cant find a solid answer on this:

I apply printers here via GPOs. Problem is, that i cant work out how to set default printers.

Is that possible with GPOs?

Hehe had this problem 2 weeks ago... Scripts I have hate Scripts LOL thats the answer I think by the way, startup and logg off scripts...

They are set by default alphabetically!

 

Just change the name of the one you want to be default to "A - Main printer" or something like that.

R2 does it alphabetically as far as I am aware ( could be wrong ), short of that you can use a script such as vbscript to set default printers.

Currently use the following in a vb script that is applied via GPO at login.

 

Set objNetwork = CreateObject("Wscript.Network")

objNetwork.SetDefaultPrinter "\\SERVERNAME\PRINTERNAME"

I've got a script that runs on the whole domain to set the printers in school. Checks agains an XML file to determine which printers to install depending on the OU. Also determines which printer is to be the default.

 

Unless that is the computer is in the Admin Computers OU, then the script will set the default printer to the local printer (either USB or LPT). Stops problems with FMS having a fit.

 

Can post the script if wanted.

The script runs when they log on from the netlogon folder on the DC. You set a environment variable in your system properties with LOCATION as the variable and then a name for the printer (OFFICE in the example below) so when the script runs it adds the printer you want. You add the same line but tell it to add a different printer. The last one added is your default.

 

Here an example from my bat file

IF %LOCATION% ==OFFICE \\server\APPLIC\CON2PRT\CON2PRT /CD \\server\printer1

IF %LOCATION% ==OFFICE \\server\APPLIC\CON2PRT\CON2PRT /CD \\server\printer2

Im not too keen on the scripting route.

There were problems with the scripting used by the old techies here, the only consistant way to get the printers to allocate was to do them with ppc in GP, which i setup.

 

Is the only way i can do default printers with scripting then?

I couldn't believe MS missed out the default printer section with the AD Deployed Printers, in the end went back to scripts!

 

Made a nice one now that can sit on the top of the OU, map by Computer OU then also checks to see if you're in a Security Group for Colour Printing, if so it maps the colour one as well. Can upload if anyone's interested.
