nathan Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 Filter 9 still down since this morning. This is making me look like an idiot after i've just recommended to all our heads we move to Schools Broadband and now one of the schools has been down since this morning.
SchoolsBroadband Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 Hi @nathan, filter 9 is up and running and has been since it had the issue some hours ago. Can you call the help desk as you may have another issue elsewhere as I can see dozens of schools using that filter at the moment when I'm logged into the box real time now. Regards David
hillskill Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 Feel for you Nathan- I too recommend them to one of our cluster schools and also look like a fool!

whs1000 Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 @tj2419 investigations are ongoing but we believe it to be load based hence the new clusters being put in quickly. We're going to be moving a number of heavy school customers onto the newly built cluster tonight on top of ones we've already moved off. There's a lot more work (and money being spent) going on top of what we've already done. Dave @SchoolsBroadband - Why has it taken 4 weeks and we still have issues ? I believe but I may be wrong, originally on filter 11 it was 2 rocket cluster, 11 and 12, but it never failed over, so you replaced filter11 with some older hardware whilst new hardware was delivered, now it is a 3 rocket cluster, filter11, 12, management but this also didn't work so now do we have 2 clusters of 3 rockets each load balanced ? or a cluster of 6 rockets load balanced ? but still not working if this morning was related to the ongoing issue ?
hillskill Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 We were all told that "considerable" work was done over the weekend but here we are again. Not good enough I'm afraid. We pay a lot of money for this service. :-(
nathan Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 Just rang for another update, would be nice if the service desk could keep me informed. It would appear that not only was there an issue with filter 9 this morning. But now one of the SB suppliers are having an issue in our area.
SchoolsBroadband Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 hello @whs1000 that's not quite right. We had 2 x physical hardware failures of filter 11. That physical filter has been changed 2 times in the past few weeks. We have added another server into filter cluster 11 and 12. This cluster is now 11,12 and 13. Adding a dedicated parent server that only does reporting and policy takes load off the child server which we saw crashed sometimes on high load. Hence why this went to a 3 server cluster. This weekend we built another 3 server cluster and have put some high user customers onto this which were on the filter 11 cluster and will be moving more over tonight also following the big traffic spike due to Windows / Office updates today (we did an additional 3.5Gbit just to Microsoft this morning). It's likely we will purchase a further 3 cluster server and we're also looking into a new load balanced solution (rather than clusters) to improve throughput and resiliency (this option was not available to us when we originaly rolled out Lightspeed). On top of that we've just signed off best part of half a million Cisco ASR upgrades and more carrier grade Fortigates too. Quite a lot is happening as we want you to have a fast stable service. Regards David

I think you've been rather unfortunate today
whs1000 Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 @SchoolsBroadband Thanks for the explanation but it doesn't explain why it has taken 4 weeks and still have problems, max capacity should have been planned before putting schools on the filter11 cluster. I dont know why updates would cause a major problem, there should be spare bandwidth capacity for these occasions as it comes round every month or is the amount of traffic crashing the rockets ? does Windows Updates traffic need to go through lightspeed ? what caused the issues on the other 7/8 outages...
SchoolsBroadband Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 Due to Lightspeeds being a Layer 2 bridge all traffic does need to go via them unless we can put some services (e.g. VoIP) on a completely separate VLAN to bypass them. I've PM'd you on your other points. Thanks Dave
Blue_Cookeh Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 (edited) If you have customers using Fortigate without Lightspeed, do they still go through your rockets or can you route around them? @SchoolsBroadband Also, I've been trying to get a test SIP line for weeks now, with no reply I'm having to take our business elsewhere now which is unfortunate because I liked SB and wanted SIP over the same connection! Who did you go with in the end as we are in the same boat (PM if you want), we asked for prices for SIP with Schools Broadband but nothing received yet, luckily we didn't have SIP lines with them as you can imagine the mess if internet and phones are down! Homer3334 Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 Hey - Filter 11 checking in - any of you guys keeping a log of the time out? Looking at the SLA, we can claim back credits on certain times out, whatever that means?

I've been looking around and Spitfire seem pretty good although i haven't had a test line.

Hello, yes you can use Fortigate only if you want and the traffic doesn't route through the Lightspeed devices. Dave
synaesthesia Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 And again.... Official complaint going in today on behalf of all my schools!
ful56_uk Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 Snap we have lost connection as well filter 9 we are on
synaesthesia Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 Yet we're helplessly locked into contract with them The joys.

nathan Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 This a common issue? :s Know some places that are considering swapping over to them. Steve It hasn't been until the last couple of months. I'm being slated from our staff in the trust.... - - - Updated - - - I wonder if Ofcom would have any input into this. 1
