Backup solutions

I'm reviewing backup at the moment due to the cost of getting all out data hosted externally and ive been looking at other solution and possible software's to do this. I have 2 physical hosts and with all the most important data on one physical host and the others. I have looked into RDX drive and LTO drives as a cheaper means of backing up data and I'm leaning towards having an LTO drive. I have looked into Veeam but it only does VM's and I'm aware of symantecs backup exec. I'm looking to backup in the region of 1.6TB uncompressed.

 

Any suggestions?

You get unlimited storage with a Google Apps for School domain, which is free, so you can use the Google Drive sync utility to sync a server's worth of files to Googlel Drive. This might take a while for 1.6TB of data, and download speed in case you need to replace the whole 1.6TB worth won't be great, either, but might make a good addition to your backup solution.

Our Qnap box seems to have been reliable enough over the years, although I don't really have much experience of its software features as such, we're just using it as an ISCSI target for something else. We're syncing to Google Drive via a Windows file server with the idea that both user shares and Google Drive will wind up with synchronised files.

Can host VM'S as well as loads of other useful features.

Installed quite a few QNAP NAS and no major problems. Biggest problem was people buying cheap HD'S which fail. WD red HD's are more reliable overall.

Off topic, but...

 

I'm very interested in syncing Google Drive with a file server. Are you syncing users' home drives or do you also include shared areas? Have you ever encountered issues when multiple users edit a file? Do you just install the Google Drive Windows client App on a server?

I had a plan over last summer to write a proper sync application for Windows file shares and Google Drive, but ran rather short of time. At the moment I'm trying out simply installing the Google Drive sync utility on a file server and copying over a bunch of files to see how well it handles them. The plan is to move over file share by file share, starting with one that only the network admins use so we can see what happens before we shift user files accross. We then plan to share each Windows file share as a shared folder in Google Drive - we'll see how well that works when we have the first file share synced. My plan is to share each user's home folder to just that user - we'll see how well that works, and how to go about automating it, shortly as well.

 

We have around 4TB of files to copy around (we might also take the opportunity to prune some older files), so this is going to take a while to sync up to Google Drive.

We're using GAFE to have a off-site backup of data. We found the google sync app was terrible - struggled on certain file types, slow and prone to crashing.

 

I found a (free) alternative - I'll find out what it is later today when I'm on site!

 

Took a long time to upload ~1tb of data but we got there in the end. Now it just syncs changes to files.

I left the Googlel sync utility running overnight and it was reporting a "could not reconnect" error this morning. From Googling the error, it looks like it just sometimes does that - fine for a desktop machine where you can restart the utility, but not good for a server where you want it to run unattended. I'm now trying Insync instead - $25 for the single-account version. The multiple account support version would be great, but I don't think we can afford $25 per user per year.

I was looking for offline backups for Google Drive when we went to GAfE in 2012, and I was looking at this one - (workflow.ae). $129.95/Year for up to 3000 users. However, Google then announced they were upping the online quotas and I simply didn't have enough offline storage to cope with it at the time. May be worth another look, though.

I like the look of duplicati and it looks like there's active work on the new beta.

Good feature is that it encrypts backups which some other solutions don't.

I have been trialing veeam endpoint backup (Free) on my physical Dc's seems to work really well. Been left with a 2tb nas to backup to since im up scaling the storage on site ill be getting a decent qnap nas. had 3 at my old school.

 

Seems to be working well so far just wish the compression was better like in backup and replication but meh its free

Yesterday Dell ran a Web Ex for us on their fairly new Rapid Recovery solution; it looked extremely user friendly and up to the job. There's a review here they are keen to set up a demo for us. Anyone on here got any experience of this?
