Ntoskrnl.exe Is Missing Or Corrupt

Suddenly got this error when booting up. Windows XP

 

1) I've run a repair on the XP installation

2) I've run chkdsk /r

 

No luck

 

 

Could any suggest anything else I could try? Thanks

You can try repairing the Windows XP installation by booting from the disc and pressing R

I'd agree, you could probably dump the file over manually but there's a strong chance there's more after that one!

Sounds like the drive is dying, that or you have a clever student. Run some diagnostic software over it - Seatools for Seagate drives, Data Life Guard Tools for WD drives.

Tried the computerhope link it works - copies the files - but the same error appears.

 

mmm......

 

This is just a small note, but I copied the contents of a laptop hd using photorec recovery to this harddrive before the problem occured. Is this a possible reason.......

was about to say either fixmbr or fixboot ( both run from the recovery console )

 

I tend to do both commands together.

 

Short of that just stick a new hard drive in and re image it.

I'd look at sticking an XP cd in, boot from it. When you are asked if you want to install or repair via recovery console say "install". Accept the licence agreement, then the cd should locate any existing windows installations. If all goes well here it will show a windows XP installation and you can press R to repair the installation. The whole windows setup program will run as if you are installing to a new Hdd but all the data is left intact and your programs will work.

 

If the install program does not recognise your windows installation you may as well just reimage or get a new drive and reimage, it's pointless trying to fix the problem as i've never managed to sort that problem out if windows doesn't recognise the installation.

poke the boot.ini as well, make sure that's OK.

Only god knows what someones done to the boot.ini theres 4copies of it! I've set the default as the correct 1 me thinks!

6. Windows NT installed on a partition bigger then 7.8GB

7. Corrupted hard disk drive or severely corrupted Windows.

This issue is often caused when the boot.ini is missing or improperly configured. This issue often arises after a user has recently added or removed an operating system on the computer or added or removed hard disk drives in the computer.

 

Make sure the line pointing to the operating system and it's drive and partition is properly configured in the [boot loader] and [operating systems] section. Additional information about boot.ini can be found on document CH000492.
