share a folder on edubuntu for xp users

Hi all can someone help me? i want to share a folder called data on a edubuntu workstation so that all my xp users can see it and write to it.

i can connect to my xp shares from edubuntu but not the other way around, i have shared the folder and try to connect to it either via network neighbourhood or mapping a drive and get asked for a username and password, i have tried every combination from the edubuntu install that i can think of but i'm obviosly missing something.

Probably needing a samba user.

Try using the command chmod 777 to set the data folder to the most open read/write permissions.

 

Also, you might have to look into your smb.conf file and set the share to something like this

 

[data]

comment = public folder

path = /somewhere/data

public = yes

writeable = yes

browseable = Yes

create mask = 0777

PS Can't remember if you have to sync windows/linux username/passwords - someone else will know and be along in a minute

you little dancer cheers kmount that works a dream. I don't suppose you know whether there is a limitation of how many xp users can connect to a samba share, does it sufffer from an xp pro style connection limitation problem?

where do i find the chmod utilitie? i know i can right click the share and have lots of different options but chmod seems like the easyist way to do permissions.

There is no artificial connection limit programmed into Samba, that's just a Microsoft limitation.

 

To run the chmod command, you need to open the terminal program. You will probably need to run it with admin privileges, so use sudo:

 

admin@edubuntu:~$ sudo chmod [-R] 777 /path/
