Sam_Brown Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 If you add a new machine as a target and it is turned off when it tries to install the client will it automatically try and install it again in the future or do you need to try and redeploy the client to any machines that were turned off?

Boredguy Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 Our staff laptops update happily when they come in after I do an update, and you can also just click on the S3 agent on the station and tell it to check for updates... redeploy is not always required.

There is an MSI, if you go in to SOLUS3 and take the menu route Settings | SOLUS3 | SOLUS then click the Export agent installer button you can extract the agent installer MSI which our schools already use with SCCM 1

Can we go one step further and include the agent in our build image? I'm assuming if you can that you will still need to "target" the machine for it to show up in the list of clients?
SHimmer45 Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 i wouldn't put the agent installer into an image as each machine had a unique ID in sims and if its cloned it doesnt work well and is not recommended capita recommend pushing it out either using SOLUS itself (machine needs to be on) or using Group Policy iirc.

What you can do though is put SIMS/FMS and/or Discover in the base image then when you use SCCM (or equivalent) to install the SOLUS3 agent it will auto define the machine's roles in S3 so you don't need to do any more work. You'll never have to upgrade the versions of SIMS/FMS/Discover in the build image as installing S3 will automatically trigger an upgrade when it's first booted up.

Just out of curiosity do you still get the issue where Exams Organiser needs to be run as an admin when it's first run after an upgrade or you get an error?

The idea is good, and at least for us it works really well when machines are on etc. But if they're off, or you rebuild something, you're left to your own devices. Shouldn't be too difficult to have a function to redeploy to a machine after a rebuild or retry when the agent next pings? :| 1

Client has to be on, and redeploying to rebuilt machines means removing the re-adding. It takes no prisoners if your DNS is even slightly wonky. It’s one of those systems around the place that ‘just works’.

Our DNS can be a pain at times. any ideas on the best documentation if I was to go down the SOLUS route baring in mind I am very new to all the SIMS stuff? SOLUS3? Na, that was 5 years ago. 3s-gtech Posted March 7, 2019 Posted March 7, 2019 I didn’t even have a login to Capita’s support services when I set SOLUS3 up - I’ve always just hammered through any issues with a combination of graft and Edugeek. Honestly though, get DNS sorted. Leases, DHCP, scavenging, refresh/no refresh intervals. It’s not a lot of work to get it really sorted (MS have some excellent guides). You may well find this site is the best one for any particular issues you have as you work through SOLUS3, so just come back and ask on any points.
Bigsby Posted March 7, 2019 Posted March 7, 2019 God I wish I could, my role currently is only helpdesk but I am currently taking over SIMS installs, because no one else will & it's a mess. Manual installs and only having 1 staff member who could do that before I started.
