Classic Gremlins in Operation (Unifi)

I'm working in my hols so not best please already!

 

before hols - stuck 2 Unifi in a school - one connected to LAN - one used to bridge to a room with no LAN so I could connect a printer in - all worked fine

 

Another 20 APs delivered yesterday so I come in to get started on the big rollout

 

RDP into server - start Unifi controller - load up browser - says the 2 APs are down - big red over WLAN icon

 

WTH!!

 

Go and check - they are working fine - DH can print from wireless laptop to printer - I can http: to it and check its status - both APs ping OK

 

WTH!!!

 

Worse is that I can't ignore it as I've powered up a new AP and the controller isn't finding it either.

 

So now got to work out why the controller doesn't seem to be working without disturbing the existing running bridged setup

 

Looks like day 1 up the swannee!

I had this happen to mine a couple of months back, all 20 APs wouldn't connect to the controller, everything carried on working with the AP's as they keep their setting stored and will function without the controller.

 

I can't for the life of me remember how I sorted it but it wasn't a difficult fix once I'd found it and all was back up and running the same day.

Forward movement

 

1. When I set up Unfi Controler initially - it conflicted with SIMS - so I shut sims down - installed unifi - got my 2APs working - then rejigged system.properties to alter ports from 8xxx range to 9xxx range

it turns out that the APs didn't seem to recognise this change and today when I SSHed into one of them - its "inform" port was still set to 8080 and not 9090 - changed it and it goes green in controller display

 

(the remote bridged one doesn't respond to this approach so I may have to reconnect it to the LAN and do it - but I'll leave it alone today as Head/Deputy are both working in the office that needs it.

 

2. Why wouldn't the new AP show up? Because the spare port on the wall in the IT suite isn't actually connected to the LAN back at the cabinet! - silly me for assuming

 

So I'm mostly back in business - only 2 hours up the swannee

excellent, I was trying to retrace my steps via logs and Google history but getting nowhere fast, I do know that it happens to me 62 days ago though and updating the controller software is what stopped it all working. I will say take a backup of your settings once you've got it all running as that will come in handy should something like this happen again.

One thing to also consider is that UniFi AP's need 22w power, and older PoE switches are 15w. They often show up as working fine but as soon as you try connecting to one it drops out and resets, with no trace on the controller.

 

Therefore make sure your PoE switch is 802.3at (30w PoE+) rather than 802.3af.
