dry Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Entries | NERC If you click on 'Most Loved Overall', you'll see the current leading entry is 'RRS Boaty McBoatFace'. In the interests of national pride, let's make sure Boaty McBoatFace wins. Get voting! Info here: NERC - Can you name our new ship?
unixman_again Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 I submitted a name yesterday (RSS Waste of Money) and I'm a bit miffed that it didn't make it, although RSS Very Expensive did. I quite like RSS Pole Dancer although I hope Boaty McBoatFace wins.
Duranis Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Who thought that naming something was a good idea to leave to the internet?

6Foot2 Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 ..."boaty mcboatface"! On that topic all of these efforts to skew the choice might be in vain: Link: Submit a Name | NERC [Terms and conditions]
unixman_again Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 It appears as though Henry Worsley has overtaken Boaty McBoatface in the name stakes.
6Foot2 Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 Link: 13 boats other than “Boaty McBoatface” with funny names | The Poke We’ve all enjoyed the world going mad for a research ship being potentially named “Boaty McBoatface” but what of the quieter tradition of small boat owners naming their boats whimsical things? http://www.thepoke.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/ctrl+alt+delete.jpg
localzuk Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I'm personally a fan of RRS Terra Australis. But that'll have no chance of winning.
Garacesh Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 At least it's not the RRS Hitler Did Nothing Wrong, lest we forget Mountain Dew's unfortunate attempt to crowd-source their new flavour... We all know the RRS Boaty McBoatFace won't win, but it's so stereotypically British to suggest it. Can you imagine? "This is Captain Dudemeister of the RRS Boaty McBoatFace, requesting permission to dock." "Uh.. Cpt. Dudemeister, please repeat." "This is Captain Dudemeister of the RRS... sigh Boaty McBoatFace. Requesting permission to dock." "stifled chortle"
korifugi Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 "This is Captain Dudemeister of the RRS Boaty McBoatFace, requesting permission to dock." "Uh.. Cpt. Dudemeister, please repeat." "This is Captain Dudemeister of the RRS... sigh Boaty McBoatFace. Requesting permission to dock." "stifled chortle" Does this mean we're all missing a trick? "This is Captain Sergeant of the RRS Dixon of Green, Requesting permission to Dock" "This is Captain Jobs of the RRS iPod, Requesting permission to Dock" "This is Captain French of the RRS Twisted Sister, I wanna Dock"
Dos_Box Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I think they should take a page out of the Culture's book when it comes to naming ships: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_spacecraft_in_the_Culture_series I'd go for 'Dip your toe in and see'.
elsiegee40 Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 According to whoever it was they interviewed on Radio 4 yesterday morning, the naming panel will take public opinion into consideration, but won't necessarily use that name
Garacesh Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 According to whoever it was they interviewed on Radio 4 yesterday morning, the naming panel will take public opinion into consideration, but won't necessarily use that name Hint: There's no way, no how, that they're going to agree to call a £200million polar exploration vessel the RRS Boaty McBoatFace They'll probably see which is the most popular 'sensible' name and use that.
unixman_again Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 Of course, who ever performs the launching ceremony, could say "I name this ship Boaty McBoatface and God bless all who sail in her" regardless of what is painted on the side. That's what I would do. BTW the site where you can vote for suggested names, appears to have been pulled - I wonder why?
