Some Users not getting Home Drives and/or proxy settings through GP

Hi, LONG time reader, first time poster!

 

After moving schools last summer, I inherited a network with about 300-400 PCs/1600 users last summer, with the servers running 2012R2 and using System Centre for deployment etc. We have a DFS on our four DCs with various shared drives and user home drives on, all mapped through group policy. Over the last week, some users when logging on have been failing to get either their home and/or shared drive (about 10-15%, and it seems random as opposed to any distinct pattern of user or machine), and/or failed to receive the proxy settings which are delivered from user configuration in Group Policy.

 

Everything has worked pretty well for the last six months, and I haven't added or removed any policies recently, what should/could I be looking for?

Dc replication issues maybe? Do you need 4 dcs?

It could be those clients are not getting all the gp info before the time out for the desktop to open due to network traffic etc. There are couple of group policies that are standard to have, you probably already have them, that might help, one was wait for network at logon but I can't remember the other as I am not at a server.

 

I'll post back the GP's and locations.

We definitely don't need four DCs. My predecessor must have been a big fan of servers as there are currently 34 virtual and physical servers in the school. I've just run a replication health check in DFS management and it didn't report any errors, is there another place I could look for them? Thanks for your reply.

This could be possible as the cabling here is a nightmare (we are in the process of tearing it out in one block and starting again, to be completed over Easter) so things can run a bit slow. Any help with the group policies would be excellent. Thank you too.

It's currently flat, we are VLANning (I'm not sure that's a word) as part of network upgrades over Easter. We do have phones on it, with their own static IP range, the PCs themselves are mainly on DHCP, although for some reason a large percentage of them have been reserved.

So if you "Replicate Now" on a DC between it and all the others, it says it's replicated all the connections?

Are these desktops or laptops, ie potential wireless issues?

Before I VLANd up I had issues like this where the network was just flooded with broadcast messages from the telephone server. Put them on their own VLAN and the problems went away.
