Hi all,

Quick question, has anyone tried moving all staff and student homedrives to onedrive areas, instead of having them local?

Just a thought

Rather than moving the home drives to onedrive we are asking staff to copy up files they want to keep, and hopefully use ruler to create a folder structure for students to save work into class groups created from our MIS.

Unless your PCs have large hard drives and users don't mind waiting for the client to sync. You can't use it as a home drive replacement. There are 3rd party utility's that come at a price. The question is : is it more cost effective to use my on prem file server or pay however much to much one drive functional annually?

I'm going to start using OneDrive for staff. My idea is start with the free service that is giving you 15GB (more than enough for every member in my case) and train them to use it through web. I don't want synchronise their laptops with OneDrive because the idea is showing them the possibilities of clouding. They will be able to access their data from everywhere. If they know they have a local folder synchronised they will keep believing they need their laptop and my idea is the opposite, avoid them to take laptops at home. Once they see this is beneficial for them (I hope) not only because of the laptops, also the no need of using memory sticks, mail for sending documents to themselves, etc etc, AND (big AND) they leave their laptops onsite I will think about synchronisation.

Office 365 Education is free and each user gets a 1TB OneDrive.

The consumer version of OneDrive only has 5GB of free space and the data most likely won't be stored in the EU.

I've been thinking about using OneDrive for Business as a replacement for Staff/Student home drives as well, but it seems that the service just isn't designed for it. Easiest would be to have the staff upload the files that they want off campus access to. Otherwise you can look at setting up Work Folders on a Windows Server to point at individual home drives for staff.

It's free if you have a domain and email accounts associated to it. We haven't got that. I'll need the staff create a personal outlook/live account.

Live account gives you 15GB for free

I don't care where Microsoft store my data, we don't have anything to hide.

That's my idea, to teach them upload what they want to work off campus with.

We are currently trialling 3rd party software that syncs from our file server to Personal One Drive accounts, as well as syncing "shared" drives with sharepoint libraries to give access to both. It is all from server to OneDrive no interaction from the teaching staff, so far it seems to work well after the initial upload which is a nightmare as you cna imagine. The idea then is to have home drives mapped as normal in school but then externally all files can be accessed through OneDrive directly, I am currenlty debating whether to get the likes of Iamcloud as well, so that externally people OneDrive are mapped as a network drive so it appears entirely seemless for them.

It is currently the best of both worls but ofcourse is more expensive, but we don't have the concern of Internet conenction being overly utilised or if it goes does then staff still have access to their files which would be my biggest concern. The plan is longer term to probably move to cloud storage, however, I don't think it is time to yet and I want to see what the impact of the new Micorosoft Licensing Agreement brings, the Cloud Transition Agreement.

Hi AChandler, what is the third party software you are using. Arthur you need to keep all data with any information on students within the EU or face breaching data protection - teaching staff keep records on their home drives.

We are currently trialling a piece fo software called Layer2 Cloud Connector.

It isn't the most user friendly piece fo software from the adminsitration side but it works fine, you have to prep your sharepoint properly to use it ofcourse. Each user has to have a .xml file to create the connection (basically chuck a few variables in there), which means 65 staff need 65 .xml files, or 1000 students would need 1000 individual connect files. The files are easy to create and I am hopefully today sort out a small VB or bash program to create the .xml files straight from a CSV file.

I know. You should tell @vimagoes! :)

This is why our school uses Office 365 Education. It's also significantly easier to manage users when they are all within a single tenant.

0k I've read the reports.

report1.png

report2.png

the reports talk about PERSONAL DATA, so as long as they use the service just for work documents (words, power points, publishers, ....) it will be 0k.

And yes @Arthur you're right, Microsoft gives 5GB right now for free :( but still will be enough for my experiment.

As i understand it, personal data refers to the information within the work documents - so if a member of staff or student is identified, for example a differentiated lesson that mentions a special needs child by name that is personal data. I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong :)

That's what I think too, as long as the document doesn't have sensible information such a SEN we'll be 0k.

The information about children won't be store but everything else such a PowerPoint presentations, texts for reading, math lessons will

Am I right or wrong? :what:
