mattx Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Yesterday our Navaho proxy / firewall / mail server died a horrible death. [ Well it died over the weekend ] I am waiting for the temp replacement to arrive - funny thing is now the teachers really don't know what to do with themselves !!! I'm getting asked every 15 mins : " When is the internet going to be back up ? " I'm ok, I've plugged my workstation straight into the router !!
CyberNerd Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 you could probably built a squid proxy/firewall and mail relay in a couple of hours using an old desktop.

Guest Guest Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 As said you can build a new proxy in no time BUT if it doesnt have filters and authentication you may be breaking some very big eSaftey rules. You're alright arnt you? Yeah, well thats ok then
nawbus Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 We were without the internet for 4 days at the beginning of term as there was a problem with our fibre link. I couldn't walk from my cupboard to the staff room without being asked by at least 5 people 'is the internet back?'. The teachers were developing nervous twitches by the end of the second day! Glad I was at BETT for one day!
gaz350 Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 i dont know why need to ask us....... cant they use their own judgement and try out their nearest laptop/pc/internet device and see if it works! hey thats all we are going to do!
tech_guy Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Whenever the internet goes down here we just pull the plug on the phones and hide in the server room to escape from the whinging!
Joanne Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 once there was a time when both our lines went down (there was something wrong with the exchange... something about a loose plug!) and it was on a pshe day... one whole day dedicated to researching stuff on the internet... oh the fun. We just sat there.... "yes the internet is down. Not our fault... sorry!"
nawbus Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 cant they use their own judgement and try out their nearest laptop/pc/internet device and see if it works! hey thats all we are going to do! Put simply, no!
Friez Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 I know a few teachers who just surf the internet during the lessons, I know because I get sent loads of random LOLCat images from them
mattx Posted January 29, 2008 Author Posted January 29, 2008 At last !! The box arrived, taken me around 4 hours to get this thing back and running - had real problems trying to upload the last backup via a 2003 share - ended up using the web server to upload it - it was corrupt [ due to the HD failing ] !! Ho Hum, now back and running with a mail server thats two weeks behind - from the last good backup - better than nothing. Thank god for backups really - I know its two weeks old but I have heard some horror stories.....
