Application/Website to Manage & Tag Photos

I've recently been approached by our Marketing department to recommend a website or software package to allow them to better manage their growing collection of photographs. These vary in nature from professional photoshoots for brochures to images they've taken in house of different departments or events. Currently these are stored in a shared folder with folders for each department, this works OK but they're after something which will allow them to assign multiple tags to a photo which they can later search for.

 

As with all education products this needs to be low cost, bonus points for something free or potentially cloud hosted to take the storage requirements for these things away from our systems.

Could you not just use OneDrive for the storage?

I think it has intelligent tagging where it groups hidden tags together (think the pictures have to be named similar though) such as Shakespeare all the pictures when searched will show up.

 

Not so used to programs to do this, they tend to just want a place to upload photos too.

Google's Picasa can do that, but sadly support is ending this month

I've just recently chucked our tens of thousands of marketing photos from the past 10 years or so into the new Google Photos thing thats replacing Picasa, it's free for unlimited photos if you don't mind storing pics at a maximum resolution of 16MP (anything higher gets automatically converted down).

 

The good thing about it is that if your original files are tagged with the correct date (which they ought to be if they've come off a digital camera) you can browse them in chronological order, it indexes the filenames and geotags so they're searchable by name and place, but the really amazing thing is the Google Images AI stuff they've put into it, it's able to recognise what things look like in pictures so you don't have to manually tag everything. I can literally search for the word "bus" or "football" and it will bring back pictures of busses or people playing football just based on how it looks, and it's reasonably accurate.

 

I'm importing photos as they're shot from a share on our network using their Sync Client, so we still have a local backup copy thats organised into folders too.
