Missing open option from Internet Explorer download prompt

Hi all,

 

This may be an easy one, but we just setup a new server etc, and it seems now that whenever anyone download something from the internet, they only get the option to save or cancel. The open buttons is gone.

 

I assume a GPO setting somewhere, but can't see it for the life of me - does anyone have any ideas which it might be?

It sounds as though it isn't notifying you once the download is complete (strange how the save and cancel button stay on though).

 

This setting is in the Internet Options > Advanced under Browsing. Its also in the same place in a GPO.

 

Could be worth checking, not sure otherwise if it isn't this. But I'm sure someone else would.

The issue is before the download rather than once it's complete... Sorry, I should have been clearer.

 

When you click a download link, and the yellow bar appears at the bottom of the screen, you usually get the option to Open, Save or Cancel - but when they click the download link users are only getting Save or Cancel:

It makes no difference on the file type downloaded or where the download comes from, unless I download at exe at which point I get the option to Run save or cancel

The only thing I can think of is that you are getting a temporary file downloaded which is then allowing you to open, save or cancel it.

 

Where as it seems they only have the option to save it first. Can they open it after they have saved it, or does open not appear then either?

Not too sure what could be causing this, maybe someone who knows server more in depth will know about it.

The users may not have write permissions to a temporary directory (usually C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Temp). I'm not sure of a GPO that affects this behaviour too, but more than possible - not found one with a quick search though.

Thanks guys - they are getting an open once they've saved, but that's not how they've had it before so it's not right...

 

I never considered it being a permissions error, and we do have some restrictions in place for the local drive - most likely that Cheers, I'll look into that now.

Bit of bump. We got this problem here and i wonder if anyone has fixed or a work around for it.

Never got anywhere with this, but it kind of became a non-problem and got forgotten about. I'll try @Steve21 's suggestion Friday. Thanks
