Students teachers and sims permission

Just wondering what you do for this? Is there any red tape to giving them their own account to get some experience of using an mis system?

 

Have you created a custom group for them with limited permissions?

We would only do it if they were employed.

They should be supervised by a teacher, and so, that teacher can log in for them. I'm sure there have been supervisors that would just give their password away to the student teacher so they could be independent, but we frown on that from a great height.

 

A limited permission group could work, but it's better to be supervised and then they could even use markbooks, access assessments etc. In theory unless the teacher has extra responsibility there's not much harm to be done apart from the fact access is being given away.

 

It's not such a big deal on SIMS as many (most?) sites won't have remote access. You don't really want to hand out credentials that provide remote access to your data, when you have no kind of contract with that person. They are not staff, and wouldn't have the same agreements / policy in place. Even if you make student teachers sign up to a policy, I wasn't too keen on it, and neither were management. It comes down to internal policy and making sure all risks are considered.

I've given ours limited permissions, it's an important part of their training to be teachers as 80%+ of schools in this part of the country are SIMS based.

 

We are a teacher training school so we have large cohorts of them through twice a year, I've got religious about creating named user accounts and deactivating them once they leave.

 

They should be DBS cleared at any rate and this way we control their access better than having a regular teacher give them their password to use (from an accountability point of view that isn't great).

The view of our head is that they should be treated exactly like teachers, so here they have the same access as teachers, including SISRA, shared drives etc.

Yes I sort of share that of bobsmith. We have never had an incident yet but I have got this on my agenda for the next safe guarding meeting.

If they're functioning as a teacher (GTP/NQT) they get teacher permissions. If they're just in for a couple of weeks and they'll be shadowing someone, they don't get SIMS access.
