Windows 7 Updates

Arrrrrrrh,

what the hell has Microsoft done,

wiped a laptop the other day back to fresh install of windows 7,

its spent over half a day "looking for updates" not even found any yet.

is this how they are going to force us onto 10.

 

anyone seen this before?

Can't say I have, I assume you have checked the Proxy Settings/WSUS settings. Does your image have SP1 installed? If not I suggest download and installing. Does Windows Update give you any errors when checking for updates at all?

Yep proxy settings are in.

its got SP1 on it

Windows update gives no error it just sits on the windows update screen saying checking for updates with the green light going across the bar.

This is why I use WSUS offline updater, keep all the updates locally

Some delay is normal as Windows Update will catalogue files and determine build numbers for installed files. However, Windows Update has it share of issues. Microsoft has the FixIt utilities, and you can download all the tools for offline use, which I find handy.

 

Some things that can hinder Windows Update are Advanced Format drives and older versions of Intel Matrix Storage Manager. Common on laptops that came preloaded with OEM images.

I have seen this when I have updated a windows 7 machine direct with windows update, I left one overnight and it was still searching the next morning! I ran update again and it found the updates after an hour or so. I have seen this both at home on my test lab and in school using the school network, and I have had windows 7 devices side by side and one will do the updates fast and the other will take ages, there seems no rhyme or reason to it. I have never seen this using WSUS, its pretty snappy with that. I did a bit of googling and its a common issue, it seems to be to do with the way that windows 7 searches for the update, I think they addressed it in windows 8 & 10.

It's a known issue. Install KB3102810 and the latest Windows Update client to fix.

 

There might be some other updates you have to install too, but those are the main ones.

Had this the other day as well.

 

Tried to run Windows updates and it just sat there but if I enabled auto updates and let it do its thing then it brought in the updates without any issues.
