Broadband Speeds

Morning,

 

Just a quick questions, were in the process changing our Broadband supplier and deciding whether to go 100/100 or 100/1GB for the next 3 years.

 

Currently, according to the LEA we're using 20-30% of our current 100mb connection at peak times so part of me thinks we've already got capacity to grow, but 3years of growth?

We're currently 1100 Students & Staff, 500 odd devices and 6th Form are starting to use Chromebooks through a leasing scheme.

 

Just wondering what other schools are using/coping with?

In my experience that's quite low for usage on a 100Mbit line with that many devices and pupils. We see nearer to 70Mbit on average.

 

You should know that most suppliers can upgrade you to a 100/1Gbit mid-term (so long as its after 12 months) if you re-sign for a new 3 year period. There may be a charge for doing so (should be sub £2k) but this can often outweigh being on a 100/1Gbit for say 2 years and paying for the excess rental charge over and above a 100/100.

Yeah taking the stats with a pinch of salt as they're from the LEA's cacti server.

We have less users, but large BYOD usage and have just moved to 500/500 (soon to be 500/1000), we had 100/100 before and were maxing out the connection at times.
