A good friend of mine worked on Halley for the same length of time. Absolutely loved the whole experience. She traveled there by ship over the equator (doing the whole ceremony thing) and via the Falkland Islands. She was a meteorologist on the base.

 

Over winter there is a core of about 30 on the base I think - in summer there is a whole lot more. There are chances to jump on a skidoo and travel up to the coast where there are more pengiuns than you could possibly imagine. She also did some camping on her days off.

 

It's worth noting that as accommodation and food are provided (although alcohol is not - and they seem to get through quite a bit), there's not much to spend your salary on when you are there - so for those who think this is for them - you'll come back with a good nest egg in your bank account!

Midwinter has been celebrated in Antarctica since the days of the early explorers and at Halley there is a week of events and parties culminating in the huge midwinter meal. The BBC World Service transmits a special programme with messages from home and a piece of music chosen by each base. It is traditional for the winterers to streak around the building, although they are allowed to wear hats, gloves and boots.
