Books to learn networking with VLANs

I picked up a lab kit for 110 quid on eBay, was two 3550 switches and a router, I would recommend the icnd1 book by wendell odom, I'm looking to book my icnd1 imminently here

I had a glance now, these days there are a couple of companies that sell the kit on ebay in the UK, so its all good. I bought a kit because their cheap enough and not all commands work on packet tracer (anything involving the ASICS stuff returns an error)

Thats one kit similar to the one I bought for £110 but with an extra router included.

 

I did have to add a little bit of memory to my router to get the latest firmware on it, which was about an additional £11 for the RAM and the CF card for the unit, though mine is an 1800 series router.

 

If you want to get good quality training CBTNuggets is excellent but can also be an expensive avenue to excellent quality training videos.

 

Also - Udemy.com can provide stuff cheaply, dont pay anything full price on there though, they constantly have sales where prices drop to around £9/10 for a course material.

That is indeed the kit I purchased, it comes with some cables, though you may need to purchase a crossover cable possibly, depending on what you are attempting in the labs (my friend was showing me some stuff whos already a CCNA)

 

Udemy.com - the courses are "OK" from what I have been through with them, I have bought the two CCNA ones through there and I also have access to the CBTNuggets ones, the nuggets ones are better as they are not targetted at any particular book, whereas the UDEMY one seems to be targetting the work of the particular author / series of books.

 

Amazon was excellent for the two official cisco exam books - 100-101 and 200-101 (I am sitting the two seperate exams here not the composite, its less stressful from what I understand, but only marginally)

Chris Bryant publishes his video courses on there. Take a look at the preview. Currently it's £21 for the CCNA one. I've personally bought his CCNA and CCNP video courses as supplementary material when I was studying and recommend them to all my friends. The only downside is I paid $100 odd for the CCNP Route when they came on DVD

The udemy courses will go cheaper than that again usually, in the year or so since I joined, they have revolving sales constantly of various discounts, get registered on there and you will find that courses drop to £9 and below at some point, I had the 70-410 courses offering themselves as that a while back, but rather than get distracted I decided to keep the path and carry on going for my CCENT.

 

Only thing I will say with the Chris Bryant course, he knows his stuff like Jeremy from CBTNuggets, but he speaks in a little bit of a monotone for me and I caught myself tuning out when going through it, it is excellent as supplemental material though.

clicked the link. Saw the price. Forgot my password, got it reset, logged in - price has gone up to £15!!!! All within 5 minutes!

 

edit: Refreshed the page and price back to £10. Weird!
