sidewinder Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Came in this morning and everyone is complaining that their Outlook settings have changed - viewing pane turned off and various other display settings. No GPOs have been touched in days. How could this possibly happen? It's not a huge deal but stuff like this is making me very disillusioned with IT, things just seem to happen with no rhyme or reason Any ideas? Running Outlook 2010 on Windows 7. Presumably I can revert everything back (if I can remember how it was) with GPOs but it really shouldn't be necessary
6Foot2 Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 What browser? We have had this reported from several users. When I get them to check in Chrome it looks normal. Checking the version of Internet Explorer they have been using it is sitting at 9/10. I am getting users to use Chrome while I update their Internet Explorer versions. SCCM/SUS should have updated their copies of IE long ago but that is a problem for another day...
sidewinder Posted January 15, 2016 Author Posted January 15, 2016 Could be a dodgy patch? That's my only thought, will have to check what has recently been installed. What browser? We have had this reported from several users. When I get them to check in Chrome it looks normal. Checking the version of Internet Explorer they have been using it is sitting at 9/10. I am getting users to use Chrome while I update their Internet Explorer versions. SCCM/SUS should have updated their copies of IE long ago but that is a problem for another day... It's using Outlook, not from a browser
6Foot2 Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 It's using Outlook, not from a browser Ah. I should pay more attention when reading these posts. We did see this also. I was trying a fix yesterday at one station but today all of the other affected stations have fixed themselves? Another update that has fixed the problem?
thimon Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 I've had to fix a few older laptops with this issue, essentially Outlook 2010 was opening in Safe Mode. I installed a manual fix from Microsoft but there is a new update which fixes it. More of a reason to update to Office 2013 or 2016.
sidewinder Posted January 15, 2016 Author Posted January 15, 2016 Aha, it is opening in safe mode! I thought it usually showed a dialog box stating that if it does but apparently not! Must be those updates then, thanks guys
thimon Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 You can download the update manually here https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3114560 which fixes the problem. The page states that this update is currently not available through Windows Update or WSUS but will be in the January Office update.
sidewinder Posted January 15, 2016 Author Posted January 15, 2016 Ah, again thanks. Couldn't work out why the new one wasn't in WSUS! Maybe not so disillusioned with IT anymore 1
sidewinder Posted January 15, 2016 Author Posted January 15, 2016 Having trouble deploying the update, using this command as found online somewhere: outlookloc2010-kb3114560-fullfile-x86-glb.exe /quiet /passive /norestart Tried it on a test machine (luckily) and it's just sat for about an hour on Applying Computer Settings so I can safely say that isn't the right way to do it...
DavR Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 We had this widely when the original buggy patch KB 3114409 was released in December, removing the patch from machines (and WSUS) resolved the problem. I did write a script to remove this, but took it off and deleted it just two days ago, sorry. If you do go down the road of an uninstall script, note that wusa /uninstall won't work, as its an office update rather than Windows, and these are installer based.
