Windows 10 Horrendous Login Times

Hi All

 

So i am doing so R+D for Windows 10 with our standard build Windows 2012 R2 system with a few tweaks (GPO's) to accommodate Windows 10. Managed to get the new v5 Profiles and Start menu sorted, pretty easily using the same methods to 8.1. Unfortunately i have found the the initial login times are horrific (2-3 minutes). Runs through all GPO's nicely in around 10 seconds then gettings stuck "Preparing Windows" (after re-enabling the Animation i found it was still trying to install Apps). I have got 2 builds that i have tested over the weekend, One Enterprise with all non essential apps removed and an LTSB 32bit build. Both of which have the same problem.

 

I had a similar problem with 8.1 removing all apps resolved this but hasn't had the effect here This isnt so much of a major issue for staff who us local profiles and folder redirection for all but the appdata so 2nd logins are 10-15 seconds. But Student profiles are roaming and GPO's are set to remove roaming cached profiles after log out to save disk space. Therefore everytime a student account logs in it can take 2-3 minutes.

 

I have tested without the mandatory profile and i get the same initial login but obviously a much faster login from there on out as i would expect.

 

I have been looking over forums for the past day with people saying 30-40 seconds seems to be the norm, just trying to work out what i am missing? Not sure if its a GPO setting or similar?

 

Just hoping someone else has come across this and got over it.

Download the LTSB version and deploy that. Comes without all the rubbish included and just works. Edited January 12, 2016 by elsiegee40

I think I read somewhere on a TechNet and I believe it was regarding Windows 8 at the time, there is a group policy that skips the Getting Everything Ready screen. So it just logs in as normal but performs those "Getting ready" tasks in the background.

 

I'm eager to start trying Windows 10 in production environments. Everything seems great just with the generic Windows 7 GPO's so far when testing.

 

I've been using the Windows 10 Edu ISO on VLSC and stripping the apps I don't want using PowerShell before Sysprepping,

I do the App Stripping in the environment where you press CTRL+SHIFT+F3 to go into Audit Mode on first boot.

I capture this and deploy that with WDS.

So far in my virtual lab these run very good.

 

Just need to convince someone to take the plunge!

Just wanted to add my experience;

 

Using the normal Edu licence and powershell to strip out all the unwanted App's

 

The 'Show first sign-in animation' GPO is similar to enabling verbose login in the past, it won't speed anything up just show you 'preparing windows...' instead of the misc animations. I have it enabled though as it looks more professional.

 

My initial login time is about 60 seconds to create initial profile. Subsequent logins 5-10 seconds

 

I did investigate UE-V but I didn't find it helped logins at all and won't affect initial login which is my main problem.

 

Since Windows 7 I've been using GPO to exclude certain folders from Roaming. Most of them in fact. All user documents/desktop/favourite folders etc are redirected with the exception of AppData which I don't intend to redirect

 

The MS recommended creating a default profile at;

is next on my to-do list when I can put aside a couple of hours to work through it

 

We've deployed to 13 staff machines now and getting positive feedback. Staff don't mind the initial login. I am just concerned at how mad it will be at IT Induction in September with large classes all performing initial login. I wonder if you can somehow script 1k accounts to log on and log off in turn and generate all those default profiles...

I've created an image using the LTSB release (So no metro apps to worry about) & did a trial run in a suite today. Logon takes well over a minute & it takes an awful long time doing anything we have in GPP (i.e printer deployment, file type settings)

It then sits there "preparing windows" for a good 30 seconds.

This is a hella lot longer than our Windows 7 build.

Same problem here, was told LTSB would be better but doesn't seem to be from our testing and the results above. Was hoping removing the junk Modern apps would help but it doesn't seem to have made much difference.

 

Over a minute on first login is awful, especially in the shared trolley scenario without roaming profiles. I'm still hoping for a fix equivalent to the WinMail registry hack that sped up Win7 logins no end but not holding my breath given the Start Menu issues etc.

Am just at the begining of my Windows 10 build (totally missed 8 and 8.1). My first test build is Education 64bit and logins are really slow when arriving at "Preparing Windows" up to that point it's only 20 seconds or so and then it's a good 2-3 mins on Preparing Windows. I haven't started work on any policies as yet. So will keep my eye on this thread.

1. Disabled Login Animation as per above post

2. When it says preparing Windows press Control + Alt + Delete to bring up the lock screen menu

3. Press ESC

4. We found a UAC prompt that the user could not see and therefore was waiting until it timed out before proceeding.

 

 

Next job for us is how to fix the UAC prompt without disabling it.

Yes, it is an installation, an adobe cs4 settings package. Created before my time here and a job for Monday
