catshilllearning Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 The latest social network to cause a controversy in schools is Yik Yak. Yik Yak is a social network, similar to Twitter, but with two defining features — posting messages is completely anonymous, and Yik Yak only shows messages posted from your immediate location. Yik Yak is a hyperlocal, anonymous Twitter. More at Why the Yik Yak social network spells big trouble for schools - The Edvocate
abillybob Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Wouldn't say it's a major problem. It's only another form of Social Networking of which no kids have been using here presumably because they haven't heard of it. I'll block it none the less though thanks for sharing! 1
Oaktech Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 How is this even news still? I've been blocking this for at least 18 months.
DalekSec Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 How is this even news still? I've been blocking this for at least 18 months. We didn't even need to do anything, went to test it and bam! Geo Block!
dry Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 If you're really worried you can apply to Yik Yak to geo-block your school. I thought they had already blocked all school campuses by default (perhaps that's only in the states?) so even the kids who have their own data plans can't use it in school. Yik Yak has been around for a couple of years but it's only recently started to be 'big'. I've had it on my phone for quite a while and given I live within 5 miles of a big university, some of the posts about the woes of being a student are actually quite witty.
sonofsanta Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 It'll be a problem for the Pastoral team, from all the anonymous cyberbullying I expect it will kick up at home, but they have indeed automatically geo-blocked UK schools, so it doesn't work while you're on site where it would be an IT problem. Which is astonishingly thoughtful and useful of them, and does rather endear me towards the developers.

sonofsanta Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Works on my phone in school? I'm quite addicted to it now it's quite funny on some of them! Go to Yik Yak Support - Questions and Concerns and request a geofence. Probably better to do it now, before the problems!
