In school - mainly everythin is thru the network lol External jobs and those times where its quicker to install off a cd, I use a CD that i custom build. It also has the 911 Rescue CD [ http://www.911cd.net ] on it for diag/repairing I make it every week or so at home, and i have made a script to automate alot of the updates to it Also, custom repacking apps helps here too *see sig* I also use PEbuilder http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ on occasion which can be very handy but not too great for the old, memory lacking machines. In school tho its sad but mostly due to time, if there is a prob with the OS, i'll restore a image on it, and then if it turns out to be hardware, then i'll fix that. Cheers, Nath

None that I can think of right now, only the inbuilt stuff in Server 2003, but over the summer I intend to try alot of stuff so would be nice to hear about some recomended ones Cheers, Nath
KarlGoddard Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 Hi All My first post....... OK, the most useful tool I use on a daily basis is a little app that our Network Manager and I put together. It uses a Kix script to capture username, time/date, IP address and computer name at logon and inserts the data into a MSSQL db. We put a web front end on it (using ASP) so we could query the db. It allows us to query room usage for MIS type stuff, track who logged when and where (to monitor pupils who may swap user details etc) but most of all we can ID excatly which machine a pupil is logged on at (by querying their user name) when they come up to the server room and say "my computer don't work" but can't remember whereabouts they were sat in one of the IT suites. Doesn't sound much I know but it's VERY useful. If anyone wants the ASP / Kix Script just shout. Cheers Karl
MkII Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 **SHOUTS** - sounds good kgcs! I use the Ultimate Boot CD [UBCD] to boot to the network and pull down an image. I don't carry CD's around anymore, as Nath says, only the OS CD's and CD's containing Servece Packs just to lighten network load - when I know i'm going to be using them. I suppose vnc has been a major player for remote support. Although some staff, particularly finance staff, seem to need a personal visit at least 3 times a day . Second most used apps would be poweroff - to script schoolwide shutdown at the end of the day. [also useful for gathering odd mac addresses] - partnered with wakelan to wake everything up of a morning.

Geoff Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 Can't beat a Linux boot CD with ntfsfix on it for rescuing screwed up filesystems. I don't know why MS bothered with chkdsk, I've never seen it sucessfully fix anything on an NTFS 5 partition.

I'll give it a whirl sometime but i presume they might use the same engine that the 911 cd uses (http://www.cdshell.org/) to the boot process.
