I'm not a huge user of Facebook at all however I was informed by a friend yesterday that I suddenly had added a lot of new Muslim friends and they had been posting weird messages on some really old posts.

I logged in and indeed that was the case, I had apparently added these had extra friend requests and messages (I didn't read those). In the end I just deactivated the account.

Any idea what happened? Seems odd to randomly target me with about 10 friends on there!

Majority of the time it's either just automated attempts on weak passwords (or already hacked passwords from another site)

Or the most common one, clicking one stupid link/app that asks you to login to false page :p

Doesn't really ever look at who it is just automated etc

I agree this is the most common reason. Disabling app platforms within facebook and changing your password is usually enough. However, nerfing your account, as you have done, is effective too!

Deactivated accounts can be reactivated if they managed to get in (happened to me - weak password (I know I know) - and I sent out loads of adverts for sunglasses!?)

If you don't want the account then you could actually, properly, irreversibly delete it.
